एकटा बकरी छली।
There once was a she-goat.
हुन्का चाएरटा बच्चा छल्खिन।
She had four offspring.
[कोनो सुनै बला से कहै छथिन] हम बिसेर ने गेल होइये। आहाँ मॅन पाएर देब।
[To someone in the audience] I may have forgotten [the story]. Help me recollect.
तऽ ओ बच्चा के नाम छलैन, एकटा के छलैन अल्लो, एकटा के मल्लो, एकटा के चैंगेन, एकटा के मैंगेन।
So, her children’s names were as follows. One of them was Allo. Another was Mallo. The third was Chengen. And the fourth was Mengen.
तऽ ओ बकरी अपन जाएत छली जखैन तऽ अपन टटरी लगा देल छल्खिन जे, “कोई ऐब कॅ हमर बच्चा नै खा लिअ।”
When the she-goat would go out, she would shut the barn-door, fearing, “Someone may enter and eat my children.”
एक दिन – सेह नऽ? – बघवा देखलकै जे ओ जहाँ कि निकललैयैबै, तऽ ओ अपन चल गेल।
One day—am I right?—a tiger saw where she emerged from, and then he went away.
अ ओ जखन बकरी अपन आबै, तऽ अपन बच्चा सब कॅ सीखा देने रहै जे, “इ खोलिहै नै। अ हम एबौ तऽ हम कहबौ,
‘अलो टटरी छुड़ाओ
मने टटरी छुड़ाओ
जेनै टटरौ छुड़ाओ।’
तखैन तू सब खोलिहैं।”
And when the she-goat returned, she instructed her children, “Never open this [door]. When I come back, I will say,
‘Allo, unhinge the barn door,
meaning, unhinge the barn door,
likewise, unhinge the barn door.’
Only then you should open the door.”
तऽ उ बाघवा सुइन लेने रहै।
That tiger had eavesdropped on her.
तऽ उ कहैलके कि जे, एलै, ओकरे आवाज में, ओ ओहिना बजलै। तऽ ओकर बच्चा सब भएर दिन बीत जायेछे जे, “माँ चरी कॅ क आबै छलै।”
Then he said, he came and spoke in her voice. It was as if the she-goat herself was talking. Then her children, who had spent all day [at home], thought, “Mother has grazed all day and is back now.”
तऽ ओकर जाके खोएल देल्के। तऽ उ बघवा रहै। उ बघवा उ चारू बचवा कॅ खा लेलकै।
So, they went ahead and opened the door. But there was that very tiger. That tiger ate all four children.
तब फेर साँझ में माय एलै तऽ देखल्के टटरी खुजल। अ ओ अपन बच्चा कॅ बजबै, “अलो टटरी छुड़ाओ।”
When their mother returned in the evening, she found the barn-door open. She called to her children, “Allo, open the barn door.”
तऽ उ त कोनो बच्चा आवाज नै दे भीतर से।
But she did not hear the sound of any of her children inside.
तखैन माय भीतर गेलै। देखलके एकोटा बच्चा नै ऐच्छ।
Then the mother went inside. She found that none of her children were there.
तखन ओत्तै बैस कॅ काने लागल,
“जे हमर अलो खेल्हन,
तिन्कर जीह कॅतैर खस्तन।
जे हमर मल्लो खेल्हन,
तिन्कर जीह कॅतैर खस्तन।”
She sat down and started crying,
“Whoever has eaten my Allo,
their tongue will be chopped off and fall out.
Whoever has eaten my Mallo,
their tongue will be chopped off and fall out.”
एन्हा कॅ क,
“जे हमर चैंगेन खेल्हन,
तिन्कर जीह कॅतैर खस्तन।
जे हमर मैंगेन खेल्हन।
तिन्कर जीह कॅतैर खस्तन।
Likewise, [she cried],
“Whoever has eaten my Chengen,
their tongue will be chopped off and fall out.
Whoever has eaten my Mengen,
their tongue will be chopped off and fall out.”
तखेन उ बघवा के जीह कतैर कॅ खैस गेलै।
Then the tiger’s tongue was cut off and fell out.
ओकर पेट फाएट गेलै।
His stomach burst open.
ओकर पेट में से ओकर चारू बच्चा निकेल गेलै।
The four children came out of his stomach.
उ अपन माए लग ऐब कॅ अपन खूब खुशी से रहै लागल।
They came back to their mother and began living very happily.
