एकटा राजा रहैथ।
There once was a king
हुन्का एकटा बेटी रहथिन। राजकुमारी।
He had a daughter. The princess.
तऽ उ अपन संगी सब संगै गिल्ली डंटा खेलै छल्खिन।
So, she was once playing the stick and crosspiece game with her friends.
तऽ गिल्ली हुन्का बड़ी दूर चेल गेल्खेन।
Her crosspiece was hit a great distance.
तऽ उ आने लॅ गेल्लै।
So she went to get it.
ताबैत में बानर देखल्केन हुन्का जे बानर को बहुत पसिंद पड़ गेल्खिन।
A monkey saw her, and he was very attracted to her.
उ बानर हुन्का पकड़ने पकड़ने लॅ के चेल गेलै जंगल ओए राजकुमारी के।
That monkey kidnapped her—the princess—and took her to the forest.
तेकर बाद हुन्का से उ शादी कॅ लेलक।
Then he married her.
ओ बहुत दुखी रहै लग्ली।
She became very sad.
तखैन उ करै की बैर के गाछ पर अपन चैढ़ जाए। आ अपने बैर खाए।
He would climb plum trees and eat plums.
अ उ तऽ बैर खा के नै रहथिन। उ तऽ छल्खिन इन्सान, हुन्का मनुख।
But she could not have survived eating plums. She was human, she was a person.
तऽ हुन्का बैर दैन जे, “आहाँ इ बेच क से आनू अ ओकर आहाँ अपन चावल दाल, से सब आहाँ अपन लॅ कॅ आऊ। अपन आहाँ बानऊँ खाऊँ।”
He brought plums for her, “You can sell these and purchase rice and lentils and everything you need for yourself. You can then cook meals for yourself.”
तऽ ओ जे जाएत, अपन घर हुन्का नै देखैन। ततै दूर हुन्का लॅ कॅ चल गेल रहैन। बहुत दूर जंगल में।
When she went go out, she could not find her home. He has taken her very far away. Deep into the jungle.
तऽ ओ बैर बेचैत अ कहथिन कि जे – हुन्कर नाम छलैन रजबेचना – तऽ ओ कहथिन कि जे,
“राजा बेटी छलों, राजबेचना छलों,
गुल्ली खेलाएत बुढ़ बानर लॅ गेल,
लेहू हो बैरमाँ, देहू हो धनमाँ,
फेर फेर जेबै ओही रे बनमाँ।”
While selling the plums, she—her name was Rajbechna—used to sing,
“I was a king’s daughter, I was Rajbechna,
I used to play the stick and crosspiece game, and an old monkey carried me away.
Buy these plums, give me money,
I will return to the same forest again.”
जे, “बेर लिअ, धन दिअ, हम फेर ओही बन जाएब।”
That is, “Buy plums, give money, for I have to return to the same forest.”
अ राजा के बेटी जे चल गेल रहैन, तऽ राजा बहुत उदास रहैत। रानी बहुत उदास रहैत।
And since the king’s daughter was kidnapped, the king was very sad. The queen was in great despair.
तऽ लोक सब कहल्केन बहुत दूर बहुत दूर का की जे, “हे, एकटा बड्ड सुंदर से लड़की अबैछै। से एना एना बजैत रहैछे फकरा जे, ‘राजा बेटी छलों, राजबेचना छलों, गुल्ली खेलैत बुढ़ बानर लॅ गेल, लेहू हो बेरमाँ, देहु हो धनमाँ, फेर फेर जेबै ओही रे बनमाँ।’”
Then some people informed them that there was a place far away, “Hey, a very pretty girl comes there. She recites the verse, ‘I was a king’s daughter, I was Rajbechna, I used to play the stick and crosspiece game, and an old monkey carried me away. Buy these plums, give me money, I will return to the same forest again.’”
तऽ ओ कहल्खिन कि, “ओ हमरे बेटी छीयै। हमरे बेटी के नाम राजबेचना छलै।”
Then he said, “She is indeed my daughter. My daughter’s name is Rajbechna.”
ओ तकैत तकैत तकैत तकैत ओ अपन बेटी के से आएन लेलैन।
He searched and searched and searched until he brought her back.
ओ बानर एक दिन देखल्कै, दु दिन देखल्कै जे, “इ कत्तऽ चैल गेल।”
That monkey waited for her for one day, for two days, wondering, “Where has she gone?”
ओ बानर फेर पता लग्बैत लग्बैत फेर ओत्तै ऐब गेल।
That monkey went to search for her and in the end arrived at their place.
तऽ इदम तऽ हीन्का तऽ एकदम केश तेश भौ गेल रहैन, अजीब सनक। एत्तै दिन में पंद्रह बीस दिन में।
Now, as for her, her hair and appearance had changed in a strange way during those fifteen to twenty days away [from home].
तऽ माय हिन्का अपन केश तेश में बाँध देल्खिन।
So, her mother tied her hair and did her makeup.
तऽ एकदम चोटी गहना गुड़िया सबटा पहिरा देल्खिन। अपन राजकुमारी जेना बना देल्खिन।
She had her daughter wear braids and ornaments, like a doll. She made her daughter look like a princess.
ओ बानर…ओ बानर जे ऐल तऽ ओ कहै कि – उ देखल्के हुन्का तऽ हीन्का डर भेलैन जे फेर हमरा लॅ जैत – तऽ ओ कहैन हुन्का देखैन अ कहैन कि, “उँ हुँ कान कनोसी झोप्पा छे लो खोप्पा के पहिरेलको गे?”
That monkey…that monkey returned and spoke to her. She saw him and was scared that he might kidnap her again. He looked at her and said to her, “Ah! Who has put earrings in your ears and twisted buns in your hair?”
मने, झोप्पा लटकल छलै पूरा हुन्का बाल बिखरल छलै, आब देखैछेन खोप्पा पहिरने, गहना गुड़िया पहिरने।
Meaning, her hair had been hanging in unruly tufts, but but now she was wearing twisted buns and decorative ornaments.
तऽ इ अपन घर में बंद भो गेली।
She locked herself inside her house.
फेर राएत भो गेलै उ बनरबा चल गेल।
Then the night came and the monkey left.
तब राजा सब सोचलैथ, रानी सब की जे, “नै, इ बानर के तऽ मारल जाए। नै तऽ इ हमर बेटी कॅ बहुत तंग कर रहल ऐछ।”
Then the king and queen and everyone else mulled [the situation] over. “No, we have to kill this monkey. If we don’t kill this monkey, he will continue to vex him a lot.”
तऽ ओ केलैथ कि जे पूरा चुल्हा सब बना बना के, ओए पर कड़ाह सब में तेल दॅ देल्खिन। खूब गरम गरम।
What he did then was that he constructed many earthen stoves and placed cauldrons—with oil—over all of them. Very, very hot [oil].
आ बुझल्खिन जे फेर एही टाइम में ओ बनरबा आउत। एकरा तॉकेला।
And he speculated that the monkey would revisit this place in order to see her at the same time.
तऽ ओ ओए में से कड़केत तेल में कनिके से आटा घोड़ल दॅ दैए पूआ।
In that boiling oil, they began dropping flour mix for cooking puaa.
तऽ ओ बनरबा कूइद कॅ जाए ओत्तै, “उँ हूँ छनमन पूआ पकैछे।” ओत्ते से ओत्तै कूदै ओ आ इहा पाव…अथि…पढ़ै, “उँ हूँ छनमन पूआ पकैछै।”
This monkey came jumping to that place, “Uh ho, the sizzling puaa is cooking.” He jumped from one corner to the other, and then read…recite the same verse, “Uh ho, the sizzling puaa is cooking.”
ओ कूदैत, कूदैत ओने से ओने जे गेल, एक बेर ओकरा पैर चूइक गेलै, ओ कड़ाह में खैस पड़ल। उ मएर गेल। तखेन उ राजा के बेटी अपन माय संगे रहै लग्लै।
As he continued jumping from one corner to the other, his foot slipped at some point, and he fell into the cauldron. He died. Then the king’s daughter began living with her mother.
