एकटा राजा छला।
There once was a king.
हुन्का सातटा बेटी छल्खिन।
He had seven daughters.
ओ अपन बेटी सब से बहुत पियार करै छल्खिन। प्रेम करै छल्खिन।
He loved his daughters a lot. He adored them.
तऽ एक दिन अपन बैसल छला सब परिबार सब संग।
One day he was sitting together with his entire family.
त अपन बेटी सबको उ बजैल्खिन अ पूछल्खिन जे, “आहाँ केकर भाग्ये कर्मे खाए छी?”
There he addressed all of his daughters and asked, “On the basis of whose fate and karma do you eat?”
तऽ हुन्कर सब बेटी कहल्खिन, छऽटा बेटी, जे, “दराजी!”
All his daughters—six of them—replied, “Yours, your lordship!”
राजा कऽ दराजी कहल जायछै घर में।
The king is addressed as “your lordship” in their home.
तऽ “दराजी, हम अहीं के भाग्ये कर्मे खाए छी।”
They replied, “Your lordship, we eat based on your fate and karma.”
लेकिन सबसे छोट बेटी किछु नै बजैल्खिन।
But his youngest daughter did not say anything.
तऽ राजा पुछल्खिन जे, “आहाँ नै बजलों?”
So the king asked her, “Why haven’t you answered?”
तऽ कहल्खिन जे, “दराजी, जन्म दैय छै माय-बाप, अ कर्म लोग के अपन रहै छै।”
She said, “Your lordship, parents give birth to their children, but everyone lives according to their own fate and karma.”
तऽ राजा के बहुत गुस्सा एलैन।
At this, the king became very angry.
उ अपन सिपाही सबके बजैल्खिन अ हुकुम देल्खिन कि जे इ कहै छैथ जे, “अपन भाग्ये कर्मे, तऽ तू जों तालाब सॅ से कछुआ, ओकरा पकैड़ कॅ आन।”
He called for his guards and gave them an order. Reacting to what her daughter had said, the king ordered them, “Since (she believes that one feeds on) one’s own fate and karma, go to a pond, catch a turtle and bring it to me.”
ओकरा पकैड़ कॅ अनल्कै।
They caught a turtle and brought it to the king.
तऽ ओ ततबा हुन्का तामस रहैन जो ओए कछुआ के संगे ओकरा बियाह करा देल्खिन। सबसे छोट बेटी के।
He was so angry that he made his daughter marry the turtle. The youngest daughter was wed.
तऽ उ बियाह भौ गेलै।
Thus the wedding ceremony was completed.
तकर बाद उ तऽ कछुआ रहै, ओ अपन भग्लै।
Afterwards, being that he was a turtle, he took off.
तऽ ओ राजा के बेटी जे रहथिन, से तखन कहल्खिन जे, “हम एकरा संगे जाएछी। इ तऽ हमर आब स्वामी भौ गेल। हमर पति भौ गेल। हम एकरा संगे जाएछी।” ओ बिदा भौ गेलैथ।
Then she, who was a daughter of the king, said, “I will go with him. He is my master now. He is my husband. I will go with him.” She bid them farewell.
माय जे रहथिन रानी, हुन्का बहुत दया अथि भेलैन।
Her mother, who was the queen, took mercy on her.
तऽ हुन्का अपन लगक जे खवासिनी रहैन, ओकरा ओ थोड़े असर्फी देल्खिन अ कहल्खिन कि जे, “तू एकर पाछु पाछु एकरा संगै जाही।”
She called for a caretaker, who was very close to her, and gave her some gold coins, saying, “Go with her, follow close behind her.”
चुप-चाप ओ देल्खिन।
She gave her instructions secretly.
उ कछुआ जाएत जाएत बहुत दूर एकटा बहुत पैग तालाब रहै, तै तालाब में चल गेलै।
That turtle walked and walked [till he reached] a huge pond that was located very far away. He went into the pond.
तऽ ओही तालाब के भीड़ पर इ बैस रहली।
She sat on the shore of that same pond.
फेर अपन खवासिनी के कहल्खिन कि जे, “एत्त कनि झाएड़ झुड़ दही।”
Then she said to the caretaker, “Could you sweep and clean up this area of the shore a bit ?”
अ ओ जे असर्फी जे माए देनै रहथिन, से लॅ कॅ कहल्खिन जे, “कोनो समान सब नैने आ। पटिया नैने आ..दिया नैने आ…दीप, से सब नैने आ, तऽ झाएड़ब बहाड़ब। अ खाए लॅ, से किछौ, चुड़ा मुरही से सब नैने आ।”
And, with the gold coins that she had been given by her mother, she instructed her caretaker, “Go fetch some items. Bring a mat…bring an oil lamp…oil lamp, and similar things. And then you can sweep and tidy up. Also, bring something to eat, bring some puffed or pounded rice and such.”
उ नैने एलैन।
She brought her these things.
तऽ ओ सबसे पहिले अपन चूड़ा मुरही अपन पात पर लॅ कॅ, उ त कछुआ त हुन्कर पति भौ गेल छलैन, स्वामी छलै।
She first prepared a leaf-plate and served some pounded or puffed rice on it. That turtle had become her husband so, he was her master.
तॅ ओए पोखर के भीड़ पर सो ओ पात पर लॅ कॅ उ चुड़ा मुरही दॅ देल छल्खिन।
She would place the leaf-plate that contained some pounded or puffed rice at the edge of the pond.
ओ कछुआ ओए में से निकेल कॅ ओ चुड़ा मुरही खा लै छलै। फेर अपन चल जाए छलै।
And that turtle would emerge from the pond and eat the pounded or puffed rice. Afterwards, he would return to the pond again.
लेकिन जतबा हुन्का असर्फी देनै रहैन माय, खवासिनी के, तेय सॅ ओ तखैन खॅर पत्ता के घॅर बना ललैथ, खरीद के ओ आनल्कैन, पटिया आनैल्कैन, होएत होएत एकटा खोपड़ी जँका ओत्तै ओ ठाड़ कॅ लैलैथ।
With however many gold coins her mother had given to her—that is, to the caretaker—she built a house of straw and leaves. She bought these materials, she brought mats, and gradually she constructed a hut-like structure there.
तखैन धीरे धीरे ओ मने भात रोटी सेहो बन्बै लग्लैथ। चाबल, रोटी सब। तऽ ओ सब दिन ओ पाएत पर लॅ कॅ, ओ दॅ देथिन।
Step by step, she began cooking rice and flatbread as well. Rice, flatbread and the like. Everyday she would put her cooked food on the leaf-plate and serve the food to him.
तॅ धीरे धीरे उ करैथ कि जे ओ पोखेर सॅ कनि आगू अपन खोपड़ी दिश कॅ से ओ पात पर जे दथिन बढ़ौने जाएत।
Then what she began doing bit by bit was that she would place the leaf-plate farther away from the pond and closer to her hut.
त ओ कछुआ ओए में से निकैल कॅ ओत्तै तक आएल जाए।
So, that turtle would come out of the pond and reach out as far as the leaf-plate had been put.
अपन खा कॅ चल जाए।
After eating, he would go back.
दु मास चाएर मास कॅ बाद होएत होएत होएत होएत उ तखैन घर में पात पर से दिये लग्लखिन। ओ खोपड़ी में। ओए में। तऽ ओ खा कॅ चल जाए।
After two to four months, she was serving the leaf-plate in her home. In that hut. Inside the hut. He would eat and go back.
तखैन इ एकदम ओढ़ना ओएढ़ लैथ, अ देखथिन कि जे केना इ खाए छै।
At one point, she hid herself in a shawl in order to see how he ate the food.
तऽ एक दिन दु दिन इ देखल्खिन कि जे ओए कछुआ में से एकटा सुंदर राजकुमार निकलै छै, अ ओ खा लै छै, फेर उ कछुआ में बैस जाएछै अ ओ चल जाए छै।
She observed him for a couple of days and noticed that there was a beautiful prince who would come out of the turtle shell, eat the meal and get back in the turtle shell and then go back.
उ सोचलक कि आए से अथि करब, मतलब एकर किछु निर्णय करब। ओए दिन ओ दिया जड़ोनै रहैथ, से खूब लॅ बला दिया जड़ेलैथ।
One day, she thought that she should do something [about the turtle]. That is, she decided to take some action. That day, she lit up a candle. She lit up a candle that had a very luminous flame.
अ जहाँ हुन्का ओकर उपर खेनाए देल्खिन अ ओ कछुआ एलै पोखेर से निकेल कॅ, खै लाग्लै, त ओए में से उ अपन निकललै कछुआ में से ओ राजकुमार, ओ खेल्के अ इ कि खूब एकदम चट्टकीसॅ से उ कछुआ कॅ खोलिया जे रहे, से उ दीया में जड़ा देल्खिन।
At the spot where she would serve him the meal, the turtle arrived there after emerging from the pond. He began eating. That is, the prince came out of the turtle shell and started eating. In the meantime, she quickly took the turtle shell and burnt it in the candle’s flame.
दीया में जड़ा देल्खिन, तऽ उ राजकुमार ठाढ़े रेह गेलै।
Since she burnt the shell in the candle flame, that prince remained standing there.
तऽ उ पूछल्खिन जे, “आहाँ के छी? मतलब, आहाँ भूत छी, कि प्रेत छी, कि दानब छी, कि राक्षस छी, कि देबता छी? के छी आहाँ?”
Then she asked him, “Who are you? That is, are you a ghost? Or, a spirit, or a demon, or a monster, or a god? Who are you?”
तऽ ओ कहल्खिन जे, “ने हो, हम कोई न छी, हम राजकुमार छी। से हम एना एना से आखेट करे लॅ गेलौं, शिकार करे लॅ, तऽ एकटा मुनि कॅ हमर तीर सॅ बाण लाएग गेलेन, तऽ उ हमरा श्राप दॅ देलैथ जे, ‘आहाँ कछुआ भो जाएब, जेहिया आहाँ के कोई आहाँ के खपलोइया के जड़ा देत, तहिय फेर आहाँ अप्पन रूप में ऐब जाएब।’ हम राजकुमार छी।”
To which he replied, “No, I am not one of them, I am a prince. I went hunting. I went hunting and my arrow ended up hitting a sage. He cursed me, ‘You will become a turtle. You will be able to regain your [human] form when someone burns your shell.’ I am a prince.”
तेकर बाद दुनु गोटा मिल गेलैन। बहुत खुशी से रहे लग्लेन।
After this exchange, they came together. They began living together happily.
तहन राजा के जे सिपाही सब रहैन, से कहॅ गेलेन कि जे, “एँह, आहाँ के बेटी तऽ, केकरो आन लोग संगे, से हुन्का एफैयर चेल रहेन्ह, ओ ओकरा संगे रहॅ लग्लैथ। ओ आदमी संगै।”
Then all the king’s soldiers, who were around, reported to him, “Tsk, your daughter is living with someone else, she is having an extramarital affair, she is cohabiting with someone. With another man.”
राजा कॅ बहुत गुस्सा एलैन जे, “मतलब हमर बेटी भो कॅ हुन्का त हम अपन भाग कर्म पर छोएड़ देलिएन!” तब उ ओत्त सॅ सिपाही सभक संगै ऐल्खिन।
The king became very angry, “Despite being my daughter, she… I left her to seek recourse from her own fate and karma.” He went there along with his soldiers.
जे, “आहाँ…आहाँ गलत काज केलौं। आहाँ के एकर हम तऽ आहाँ कॅ दण्ड देब। आहाँ कॅ त हम मृत्यदण्ड देब।”
He said to her, “You…you have done wrong. We will have to punish you for this. We will have to sentence you to death.”
ओ कहल्खिन कि जे, “नै, दराजी, हमर गॅप्प आहाँ सुनु।” ओ सुनै लॅ ने तैय्यार।
She replied, “No, your lordship, please listen to my story.” But he was not willing to hear her story.
लेकिन तखेन ओ, तैय्यो बहुत कहल्खिन। तऽ उ सुनल्खिन जे, “नै, एना एना हीन्का श्राप छलैन, तऽ तै इ छला। इ रीयल हमर वैह छीयैथ। हम जे आहाँ कॅ कहलों जे, ‘जन्म दे छै माय-बाप, अ कर्म लोग कॅ अपन रहैछे,’ से हमर कर्म देखू।”
But she insisted, she pleaded profusely. So he listened to her, “No, as it happens, he [the turtle] was cursed, that is why he was this way. He [the prince] is the same, the real one. I had said to you, ‘Parents give birth, but everyone bears their own fate and karma.’ So, please see that this is my karma.”

माय जे रहथिन रानी, हुन्का बहुत दया अथि भेलैन।

अ जहाँ हुन्का ओकर उपर खेनाए देल्खिन अ ओ कछुआ एलै पोखेर से निकेल कॅ, खै लाग्लै, त ओए में से उ अपन निकललै कछुआ में से ओ राजकुमार, ओ खेल्के अ इ कि खूब एकदम चट्टकीसॅ से उ कछुआ कॅ खोलिया जे रहे, से उ दीया में जड़ा देल्खिन।
दीया में जड़ा देल्खिन, तऽ उ राजकुमार ठाढ़े रेह गेलै।
तऽ उ पूछल्खिन जे, “आहाँ के छी? मतलब, आहाँ भूत छी, कि प्रेत छी, कि दानब छी, कि राक्षस छी, कि देबता छी? के छी आहाँ?”
तऽ ओ कहल्खिन जे, “ने हो, हम कोई न छी, हम राजकुमार छी। से हम एना एना से आखेट करे लॅ गेलौं, शिकार करे लॅ, तऽ एकटा मुनि कॅ हमर तीर सॅ बाण लाएग गेलेन, तऽ उ हमरा श्राप दॅ देलैथ जे, ‘आहाँ कछुआ भो जाएब, जेहिया आहाँ के कोई आहाँ के खपलोइया के जड़ा देत, तहिय फेर आहाँ अप्पन रूप में ऐब जाएब।’ हम राजकुमार छी।”

जे, “आहाँ…आहाँ गलत काज केलौं। आहाँ के एकर हम तऽ आहाँ कॅ दण्ड देब। आहाँ कॅ त हम मृत्यदण्ड देब।”
ओ कहल्खिन कि जे, “नै, दराजी, हमर गॅप्प आहाँ सुनु।” ओ सुनै लॅ ने तैय्यार।
