तऽ एकटा बुढ़िया रहै। एगो बुढ़िया रहै। ओइ बुढ़िया के भगवान महादेव बहुत मने दिक्कत देने रहय छै।
There once was an old lady. An old lady. The god Mahadev [Lord Shiva] had given her a lot of trouble.
एकटा माने लताम के गाछ रहय ओइ लताम के गाछ के पेड़ लंग से ओइ बुढ़िया बैसल रहय छल राति दिन। ओइ बुढ़िया के एकटा चलनी से माने पेन्हनाइ आ एगो चलनी ओहिना।
There was a guava tree, and that old lady would keep sitting day and night at the tree. That old lady had two shawls. One she would cover herself with. And the other was extra.
दूइए गो चलनी एगो मने ओढि नेने आ एगो मने झँपने, झाँपन।
Just two shawls, one she had wrapped and the other she had kept to cover things with.
तऽ दूइए टा समान हुनका माने भगवान देने रहथिन आ लताम के पेड़ लंग बुढ़िया बैठल। लताम जे फरै मने सब दिन नै बुढ़िया अपने तोड़ि कऽ खै नै ककरो तोड़ऽ दय आ नीचामे जे खसय, नीचामे जे खसय मने लताम तऽ बुढ़िया अपन कि न से खैल करय। बिछ कऽ खा लियै आ तोड़ए नै।
So God had given her only two things. And she was sitting at the guava tree. The fruits that would grow on that tree, the old lady would neither pick and eat them nor allow others to do so. She would pick up the fallen ones and eat them.
तऽ भगवान माने भेजलखिन माने नारदजी के से जाउ माने मरत भुवनमे देखियौ गऽ से माने के माने हँसए हय आ के कनय हय आ के माने सही हय आ के नय हय।
One day God sent his bull vehicle, Narad, to visit the mortal world and check on who is laughing and who is crying, and who is behaving right and who is not.
तऽ नारदजी एलखिन। तऽ नारदजी सौंसे गाम सौंसे घूमि भगरि कऽ देखि लेलखिन तऽ सब सही रहय आ ओइ बुढ़िया जे लताम के पेड़ लंगमे जे गेलय तऽ लताम के पेड़ लंग बुढ़िया के देखलकय माने एगो चलनी ओढने एगो चलनी पेन्हने। ऊ ने माने कि भेलय तऽ माने ऊ बुढ़िया कि ने ऊ नारदजी हँसऽ लगलखिन।
Once Narad arrived there, Narad travelled throughout the village and saw that everything was in order. When he arrived at that guava tree and saw that old lady near that tree, he saw an old lady wearing one shawl and holding the other. Narad started laughing at the sight of the old lady.
हँसऽ लगलखिन तऽ ऊ बुढ़िया कहय हय कि ए नारदजी,कियैक तू हँसए छ? हमरा देखि कऽ हँसए छ। तऽ ओ भगवान के कहियहक से हम कहियो ने दान पुण्य केलियय से हमरा एते दिक्कत देने हय से तू कहियहक माने महादेवजी के।
As he was laughing, the old lady asked, “Hey, Narad, why are you laughing? Are you laughing at me? Go and tell God that since I never gave alms or earned goodwill that’s why he has given me so much trouble, tell this to Mahadev.”
ऊहां माने कहलकय अच्छा बुढ़िया हम जाय छियौ हम कहबौ महादेव के।
He said, “Sure, old lady, I am going and will tell Mahadev.”
गेलखिन माने नारदजी जे गेलखिन तऽ नारदजी कहलखिन कि जे से माने पूछलखिन भगवान कि से भगवान पूछलखिन कि नारदजी कहऽ माने मरत भुवनमे कि अथी हय।
When Narad returned, God asked him, “So, tell me how things are there in the mortal world.”
तऽ कहलकय सब चीज तऽ बड़ बढ़िया बड़ चिक्कन हय एगो बुढ़िया रहय से ऊ बुढ़िया ने से बड्ड दिक्कत हय।
To which he replied, “All is going well, very smoothly, but there is an old lady who is having a lot of difficulty.”
बुढ़िया के एगो लताम के पेड़ हय तइ जांग ऊ बुढ़िया बैठल हय से ऊ बुढ़िया के एगो चलनी हय ओढने आ एगो चलनी हय पेन्हने से ऊ बुढ़िया कहलक हन कि से भगवान के अहाँ कहबय महादेवजी के कहबैन से मने हम कहियो ने दान पुण्य केलियय कुछ से हमरा एते दिक्कत देने
छथिन्ह से हमरा कहलक हन।
“The old lady sits under a guava tree, and she has a shawl with which she has wrapped herself and another shawl she has kept as a cover. She told me, ‘Tell Mahadev that I have never given alms and earned goodwill, that’s why he has given me so much trouble.’”
भगवान देखऽ लगलय बुढ़िया के पत्रा। आ बुढ़िया तऽ छलखिन माने कुछ माने अपने जनय छलखिन शिवगुरू के शिष्य माने बनल छलखिन। तऽ बुढ़िया मने जनय छलखिन।
God began looking into the book of her destiny. And the old lady herself knew all this, as she was a disciple of Shiv Guru. So, the old lady knew it.
तऽ ऊ कि न से देखऽ लगलखिन हुनकर पत्रा। देखैत देखैत ऊ कि ने एक पौआ एक पौआ दान केने रहय बहुत दिन मने कनिके टा के मने बच्चा रहय हय तऽ कोई नै कहय हय कनी दऽ दही एते, उठा कऽ दऽ देने रहय मने जी काटि कऽ ऊ दान केने रहय।
Now, he began checking her destiny book. Continuing to check it, he found that when she was a child (and as you know, people often tell a child, “hey, why don’t you give a bit from your hand?”) she had given just a quarter as an alm to somebody.
तऽ ओ बिहान भेने दोसरा दिन भेने फेर एलखिन नारदजी तऽ बुढ़िया ओइ जांग बैसल फेर सौंसे घूरि कऽ एलखिन तब गेलखिन ओइ के सामने तऽ कहलकय ऐं हौ नारद, हौ हमर समाद लऽ कऽ एलऽ।
Then next morning, Narad went there again and after travelling all around, he arrived again to where the old lady was sitting. As he went to her, she asked, “Hey, Narad, did you deliver my message?”
तऽ कहलकय हँ लऽ कऽ एलियौ बुढ़िया से तू दान पुण्य नै छी कहियौ केने आ एके पौआ दान केने छै आ बहुत दिन।
To which he replied, “Yes, have delivered it, old lady. You have not given any alms, and have offered only a quarter, and even that too long ago.”
कहलकय, कहिया केने छियय?
She asked, “When?”
तऽ कहलकय कनिकबे टा के रही तभी तू केने छही एक पौआ दान।
He said, “You were a very small child when you gave a quarter.”
तऽ कहलकय तऽ हमरा नेने चल। हम एके पौआ दान केने छियै तऽ चलऽ हम जेबौ।
She then said, “Take me along. If I have given out only a quarter, then let’s go, I will come along.”
नारदजी कहलकय हमरा जड़े तू कतऽ जेभी।हमरा जड़े तू जेभी कहाँ।
Narad answered, “Where do you wish to go with me? Where would you go with me?”
तऽ कहलकय हम जेबै न तू हमरा नेने ने चलऽ। हम जेबै तोरे जड़े पाछू पाछू।
She replied, “I know where I will go, you just take me along. I will follow after you.”
कहलकय चल जेबै तऽ।
He acquiesced, “Come, if you really want to go.”
बुढ़िया जाय लगलय। जाइत जाइत जाइत जाइत कहलकय मगर लऽ जेबौ आ थोड़े दूर लऽ जेबौ तऽ हम तोरा नै लऽ जेबौ तू अपने जइहैं हम तोरा अपना जड़े नै लऽ जेबौ।
The old lady began walking. As they were walking, he said to the old lady, “I am taking you along, but I will take you only a small distance, and you will go from there on your own. I will not take you along the entire way.”
कहलकय अच्छा हमरा नै लऽ चलिहऽ, हमरा रस्ता देखा दिहऽ।
She said, “That’s fine, don’t take me the whole way, just show me the way.”
बुढ़िया चलि गेलय। ओ थोड़े दूर जे गेलखिन नारदजी अपन रस्ता दऽ कऽ निकलि गेलखिन ओकरा छोड़ि देलकय। बुढ़िया अपन उतलाइत भूतलाइत अपन चलि गेल।
The old lady left with him. After having gone some distance, Narad left her there and went his own way. The old lady went wandering and searching from that point.
गेल जे माने गेट रहैन माने निकलय जाय बला भगवान लंग भगवान के दरबारमे। ओइके माने पहरेदार रहय,पहरेदार रहय। पहरेदार कहलखिन कि नै ऊ बुढ़िया के जाय दय। बुढ़िया कहय हम जेबय आ ऊ कहय हम नै जाय देबऽ।
When she arrived, there was a gate for entry and exit near God’s courtyard. There was a gatekeeper there. He said to the old lady, “I won’t let her in.” The old lady was adamant, insisting, “I will go.” But the gatekeeper would respond, “No.”
तऽ कहलकय कियै नै हम आयब, बुढ़िया कहलकय ओइ पहरेदार के जे कियै नै जाय देबहक। नारदजी गेलय है से नारदजी लै रस्ता छलय हमरा लै नय हय रस्ता से हम नय जेबय। हम जेबय।
The old lady then asked the gatekeeper, “Why can’t I come, why would you not let me go? For Narad, there was a way, but seemingly not for me. But I must go. I will go.”
तऽ ऊ गेट के बंद कऽ देलकय आ गेलय भगवान लंग कहय लै जे भगवान एना एना एगो बुढ़िया है से ई बुढ़िया हमरा कि नय बड्ड अथी केने हय अहाँ लंग अबय यै।
So he closed the gate and went to God saying “Hey, God, there is an old lady and she is pestering me a lot to allow her to enter and reach you.”
तऽ कहलकय आबऽ दहक। भगवान कहलकय आबऽ दहक औतय तऽ।
God said, “Ok, let her come. Allow her in if she wants to come.”
बुढ़िया गेलय। बुढ़िया गेलय तऽ प्रणाम कऽ लेलकय, कहलकय ऐं हो भगवान, महादेव जी कहियो ने हम माने दान पुण्य केलियय से तू हमरा एते गंजन छ देने।
The old lady went there. Upon arrival, she greeted God, saying, “Hey, God, Lord Mahadev, since I have never given any alms, you have given me so much suffering.”
कहलकय हँ तू केने छैं एक पौआ।
He said, “Yes, you have given only a quarter.”
तऽ कहिया?
She asked, “When?”
तऽ कहलकय बहुत दिन केने।
He answered, “Long ago.”
तऽ कहलकय हमरा बहुत दिन केलियय ने हमरा मृत्यु भवनमे से सूद दय हय। हमर सूद जोड़ऽ कते भेल। सूद जोड़ऽ लगलय। सूद जब जोड़ऽ लगलय, जोड़ैत जोड़ैत मने बहुत घरेक भऽ गेलय।
And she followed up, “Since I have spent such a long time in the mortal world, they gave me interest on it. Please calculate how much interest I have earned.” So he started calculating the interest, and the sum was huge.
सूद जोड़ैत जोड़ैत भगवान के भऽ गेलय माने मूलसँ ऊपर भऽ गेलय माने ऊ सूद मूल। तऽ कहलकय अच्छा आब जो।
When the interest calculate was complete, her total interest amounted to more than the principal. So he said, “Ok, fine, go now.”
कहलकय हम ओना नै जेबऽ। हमरा कुछ वरदान दै तब हम जेबौ।
She replied, “I won’t go just like that. Please give me some blessing; then I will leave.”
कहलकय तोरा हम कथी वरदान दियौ।
God said, “What blessing shall I give you?”
कहलकय हम ओनाहिथे खालिए जैब हमरा वरदान दै कोनो तब हम जैब।
She said, “Should I leave just like that, empty-handed? No, give me some blessing, and then I will leave.”
कहलकय ठीक हय जो तू जकरा जे कहबीही से भऽ जेतय।
To which he replied “Ok, go. Whatever you say to others, that will happen for sure.”
बुढ़िया ओइ ठामसँ एलय। एलय बुढ़िया आबि गेलय।
The old lady left there. She returned.
फेन ओ कहलकय जो लतामे के गाछमे बैठल रहियैं। आ ओहि ठमा लताम तोड़ि तोड़ि खाय छी न?
He instructed her, “Go, and sit near that guava tree. And will you pick and eat the guava?”
तऽ नय ने हम खाय छियय न ककरो खाय दय छियय।
“No, I don’t. Nor do I allow others to do so.”
कहलकय जो ओहि छिना बैठल रहियैं आ लताम खहियैं।
He said, “Go, keep sitting there and eating the guava.”
ऊ बुढ़िया, बुढ़िया के आब जाय के समय आबि गेलय। आब औरदा पूर भऽ गेलय बुढ़िया के। औरदा पूर भऽ गेलय तब ऊ यमराज के भेजलखिन भगवान से जा मने ऊ बुढ़िया के लताम के पेड़ लंग बुढ़िया हय तकरा लाबऽ गऽ।
Now, that old lady’s time of earthly departure had come. Her life was over now. And since her life was coming to an end, God sent Yamraj, saying, “Go and retrieve the old lady who is sitting at the guava tree.”
तब ऊ लताम के पेड़ लंग जब ऊ यमराज एलखिन, तब यमराज बुढ़िया के देखलकय तऽ ऊ बुढ़िया के तऽ भेषे रहय तेहने तऽ केना नै हँसितै। यमराज हँसऽ लगलखिन।
So when Yamraj came to the guava tree and saw the old lady, you know the old lady had such a outfit on, how could he not have laughed? Yamraj began to laugh.
तऽ बुढ़िया कहय, हौ यमराज, तू हँसय छह कथी लै? कियै हँसलक हमरा देखि कऽ?
Then the old lady said, “Hey, Yamraj, why are you laughing? Why did you laugh when looking at me?”
कहलकय हँसलियौ तोरा आइ लऽ जेबौ। तोहर औरदा पूरि गेलौ।
He said, “I laughed because I will take you along today. Your life is at its end.”
कहलकय औरदा जे पूरि गेलय तऽ तू हमरा कि नय अइमे सँ लताम हमरा पाँच गो तोड़ि कऽ दै खाय लै। हम लताम खा लेबऽ तब माने हम अइ जांगसँ जेबऽ तोरा लंग।
She said, “If my life is over, then pick five guavas from this tree and give me them to eat. When I have finished eating them, I will go along with you.”
यमराज गाछ पर चढ़लय ओ कि जाने गेलय। गाछ पर चढ़लय जों लताम के तोड़ऽ लगलय गाछमे यमराज सटि गेलय। यमराज गाछमे सटि गेलय। सटि गेलय तऽ बुढ़िया के कहलकय गय बुढ़िया हमरा तू गाछमे सटा देलैं से कियै हमरा सटा देलैं, तों डाइन जोगिन छैं से हमरा सटा देलैं।
Yamraj climbed the tree. How could he know what would come to pass? And as he started picking the guava, he got stuck to the tree. Yamraj got stuck to the tree. Being stuck, he said to the old lady, “Hey old lady, you made me be stuck in the tree; why did you get me stuck?. You are some sort of witch, and you got me stuck.”
कहलकय नय हम डाइन नय छी। आब तू हमरासँ शर्त करऽ तब तोरा हम से छोरा देबौ। तू हमरासँ शर्त करऽ।
She said, “No, I am not a witch. Now once you agree with me, then I will leave you. You have to enter into an agreement with me.”
कहलकय तोरासँ हम कि शर्त करियऽ तू हमरा कह न।
He said, “What agreement should I come to with you, tell me.”
कहलकय नय तू हमरासँ शर्त कऽ ले तब छूटि जेबऽ तू।
She replied, “No, you come into an agreement and you will go free.”
तब कहलकय, कहलकय तू सुनऽ। ऊ शर्त केलकय यमराज।
Then he said, “Listen.” He came into agreement then.
कहलकय तों एतने तू करऽ हमरा साथे तू माने जाहऽ आ हम तोरा जने नय जेबऽ। तों भगवान के कहियक महादेवजी के आ विष्णुजी के अबय लै आ नारदजी के अबय लै आ तोंहू अइहऽ। चारि गोरे मिलि कऽ, चारि पाँच गोरे मिलि कऽ अइहऽ। आ हमरा लै कहियक माने भगवान के महादेवजी से हमरा लै डोली कहार नेने अबय लै तब हम जेबय ओना हम नय जेबय।
“Do only this, but I will not follow along. Tell God, Mahadev, Vishnu, Narad to visit me, and you too should come along. All four people should come together, five people together. And tell Mahadev on my behalf that he should bring a palanquin with its carriers to take me along. Only then I will go; otherwise I won’t.”
तऽ ऊ गेलय। घूरि कऽ ओ गेल। छूटि गेलय तऽ ओ गेलय। तऽ ऊ गेलय भगवान लग कहलकय हे भगवान ओइ बुढ़िया के तू कोन माने कि न से वरदान दऽ देने छहक से हमरा तऽ ओ गाछमे छल सटा देने। आब अहाँ जइयौ।
Then he left. He went back. When he got free, he left. So when he went back to God, he addressed him, “Hey, God, that old lady…I don’t know which blessing you have given her that she made me be stuck to the tree. Now please, go there.”
आब अहाँ के कहलक हय अबय लै आ विष्णुजी के कहलक हय अबय लै महादेवजी अबय लै कहलक हन आ अथी हमरो कहलकय हय अबय लै, नारदजी के सब कोई मने जेबय तब बुढ़िया एतय आ कहलक हय डोली कहार सबटा नेने अबय लै।
“Now, she has asked you to visit her, and take Vishnu and Mahadev along. And she has also asked me to go along, and Narad, as well; all of us will have to go. Then the old lady will come. And she has told me to bring everything, the palanquin and its carriers.”
तऽ एके पौआ दाना जे ऊ रहय दान केने तयमे भगवान के सबके महादेवजी के, विष्णुजी के, नारद के ओइ एके पौआमे डोली कहार सबटा लऽ कऽ हिनका आबऽ पड़लैन तऽ माने बुढ़िया के लऽ गेलखिन।
So for just one quarter of grain that she had given in alms, all the gods – Mahadev, Vishnu,, Narad, all had to come, for just one quarter, and then they took the old lady along.

तऽ एकटा बुढ़िया रहै। एगो बुढ़िया रहै। ओइ बुढ़िया के भगवान महादेव बहुत मने दिक्कत देने रहय छै।

हँसऽ लगलखिन तऽ ऊ बुढ़िया कहय हय कि ए नारदजी,कियैक तू हँसए छ? हमरा देखि कऽ हँसए छ। तऽ ओ भगवान के कहियहक से हम कहियो ने दान पुण्य केलियय से हमरा एते दिक्कत देने हय से तू कहियहक माने महादेवजी के।
ऊहां माने कहलकय अच्छा बुढ़िया हम जाय छियौ हम कहबौ महादेव के।
गेलखिन माने नारदजी जे गेलखिन तऽ नारदजी कहलखिन कि जे से माने पूछलखिन भगवान कि से भगवान पूछलखिन कि नारदजी कहऽ माने मरत भुवनमे कि अथी हय।
तऽ कहलकय सब चीज तऽ बड़ बढ़िया बड़ चिक्कन हय एगो बुढ़िया रहय से ऊ बुढ़िया ने से बड्ड दिक्कत हय।

तब ऊ लताम के पेड़ लंग जब ऊ यमराज एलखिन, तब यमराज बुढ़िया के देखलकय तऽ ऊ बुढ़िया के तऽ भेषे रहय तेहने तऽ केना नै हँसितै। यमराज हँसऽ लगलखिन।
तऽ बुढ़िया कहय, हौ यमराज, तू हँसय छह कथी लै? कियै हँसलक हमरा देखि कऽ?
कहलकय हँसलियौ तोरा आइ लऽ जेबौ। तोहर औरदा पूरि गेलौ।
कहलकय औरदा जे पूरि गेलय तऽ तू हमरा कि नय अइमे सँ लताम हमरा पाँच गो तोड़ि कऽ दै खाय लै। हम लताम खा लेबऽ तब माने हम अइ जांगसँ जेबऽ तोरा लंग।
यमराज गाछ पर चढ़लय ओ कि जाने गेलय। गाछ पर चढ़लय जों लताम के तोड़ऽ लगलय गाछमे यमराज सटि गेलय। यमराज गाछमे सटि गेलय। सटि गेलय तऽ बुढ़िया के कहलकय गय बुढ़िया हमरा तू गाछमे सटा देलैं से कियै हमरा सटा देलैं, तों डाइन जोगिन छैं से हमरा सटा देलैं।
कहलकय नय हम डाइन नय छी। आब तू हमरासँ शर्त करऽ तब तोरा हम से छोरा देबौ। तू हमरासँ शर्त करऽ।
