जासर नाम के एकटा राज रहय मुहबिया। तऽ ई राजमे राजा रहय जासर। जासर नाम छलय। क्षत्रिय छलय, जासर नाम छलय क्षत्रिय छलय। दोस्त रहय राजा सैय्यहद। मुसलमान रहय ओकर दोस्त राजा सैय्यहद रहय मुसलमान। 

There once was a king named Jasar who lived in a kingdom called Muhabia. So, Jasar was the king there. Jasar was Kshatriya by caste. His friend was King Sayyad. His friend was a Muslim, King Sayyad. 

तऽ जइ दिनमे ऊ दुरागमन कऽ कऽ एलय मने कनिया एलय,  कनिया के जे लौलकय दुरागमन कऽ कऽ तऽ ऊ राजा सैय्यहद मुँह देखाइमे कनिया के दोस्तिनी के नौ लाख के कंगना देलकय सोनाकेँ मुँह देखाइमे।

So, the day he came along with his wife for the first time after they had been wed, King Sayyad gifted a gold bangle worth nine lakh rupees in order to see his friend’s wife’s face.

एक दिन एहन भेलय जेठ बेटा जे रहय… जासरक कनिया के नाम रहय देओला, रानी देओला। रानी देओला के जन्म लेलकय बेटा अल्हा। अल्हा जन्म लेलकय आ बादमे से भादो मास कऽ से रूदल जन्म लेलकय। तऽ पंडितजी लौलकय। पंडितजी एलय जे नामकरण हेतय। बच्चा के छठिहार हेतय तकर दिन देखियौ। 

One day what happened was, his elder son… Jasar’s wife was named Deola, Queen Deola. Queen Deola gave birth to a son called Alha. After Alha’s birth, Rudal was born in the month of Bhado¹. Then the priest brought him. The priest came to name the child. “Please identify an auspicious date for the Chhatiyar sixth day ceremony.”   

तऽ पंडितजी कहलखिन जे पाँच गो भदबरिया आम लऽ कऽ से एकरा साठि पूजल जेतय। तऽ अल्हा के कहलकय आ गाछी रहय जासर के भाई के कि नाम रहय से हम नै जनैत छियय। भतीजा रहय दू टा। एकटा के नाम रहय कागा आ एकटा के नाम रहय झगरू।

The priest then said, “With five mangoes picked in the Bhado month, Saaithi worship will be done for the child.” So they asked Alha to… the orchard was Jasar’s brother’s, whose name I don’t know. Jasar had two nephews, one named Kaga and the other was Jhagru.

तऽ भतीजा रहय जासर के झगरू आ कागा। तऽ कागा ओगरय आम। सुनने छियय खिस्सा? तऽ आम ओगरैत रहय। ई खिस्सा नै छियय। ई भेल छै। तइ दिनमे भेल छै। तऽ आम ओगरैत रहय। ई अल्हा जे गेलय कि नय तऽ गाछमेसँ आम तोड़लकय। सझिए गाछ रहय,आम तोड़लकय। 

So, Kaga and Jhagru were the nephews of Jasar. Kaga would keep vigil on the mangoes. Have you heard the story? So he was keeping vigil on the mangoes. This sort of thing has actually happened. In those days it would happen. So, he was keeping vigil on the mangoes. When Alha went there, he picked the mangoes from the tree. The tree was their joint property; he picked the mangoes. 

तऽ कागा लोल अइंठ कऽ देलकय। अइंठ कऽ देलकय कि ने तऽ ऊ धिया पूता जाइत रहय ओकरा गारि तारि पढ़लकय जे आम कियै अइंठ केलैं। तइ लै ऊ कागा मारलकय ओइ अल्हा के आ ओ आम ताम छीन लेलकय। अल्हा कनैत गेलय अपना बाप लग, जासर लग।

So, Kaga tasted it with his lips before giving it.. And the kids there chastised Kaga, “Why did you taste the mango?” For that reason, Kaga beat Alha and snatched the mangoes. Alha went crying to his father, Jasar.   

जासर के कहलकय जे एना एना से कागा भैया आम छीन लेलक आ मारलक। ओतऽसँ जासर एलय आ दू टा चारि टा बातो कहलकय कागा के आ एक थापड़ मारिओ बैठलय जे तू एना एना लऽ गेलय पूजा करय लै तऽ तू केना कऽ छीन लेलही। बड़ बढ़िया चलि गेलय। 

He told Jasar, “Kaga brother snatched mangoes and beat me.” So Jasar went there, shouted at Kaga and even slapped him once, saying, “He went there [to fetch mangoes] for worship, so how dare you snatch them from him!” And with that, he left.

ई कि केलकय कागा तऽ कनैत एलया झगरू लग जे भैया हम एते दिनसँ आम ओगरलौं, जाल लगा कऽ रखने छलौं आ से हमरासँ नै मंगलक आ अपने आधा आम तोड़ि लेलकय। आ हम छीन लेलियय तइ लै अल्हा हमरा गाड़ि पढ़लक तऽ हम मारलियय से तइ लै  से जासर कक्का आबि कऽ से हमरा मारलक हऽ आ आमो तोड़ि कऽ लऽ गेलय।  

What Kaga did was to go to Jhagru, saying, “Elder Brother, I was keeping vigil on the mangoes for so long, and he came and, without asking me, picked half the mangoes. And since I snatched them back, Alha berated me. When I beat him up, uncle Jasar came and beat me in return, even picking the mangoes and taking them away.”

झगरू कहलकय चुप रह। छठिहार भेलय। कहलकय कि जे दू टा तेगा बना कऽ लौलकय झगरू। तेगा मने भेलय तलवार। तेगा बना कऽ लौलकय आ भानस केलकय। एकरा कहऽ नै एलय तू कियै मारलऽ कि कि केलहक। भानस केलकय। तऽ कहलकय कि जे कक्का आबिहऽ खाय लै तऽ संगेमे अल्हो गेलय। बेटा जे रहय संगेमे सेहो गेलय खाय लै अल्हो। 

Jhagru asked him to keep quiet. The Chhatihar ceremony took place. Jhagru made and brought two swords. He brought two swords and cooked a meal. He didn’t tell Jasar why he hit his brother or anything. He cooked a meal. He said, “Uncle, come over for lunch.” And then Alha also accompanied his father. Jasar’s son Alha accompanied him for lunch.

कहलकय जे, खाय लै देलकय। खेलकय आ कहलकय कक्का तेगा बना कऽ लौलियय हऽ से एकरा जाँचि दहक। तऽ एना कऽ जीभ लऽ कऽ एना कऽ केलकय, एकटा तागा लचि गेलय तऽ कहलकय ई असली नह नय भेलौ। दोसर देलकय फेर एना कऽ केलकय ओहो लचि गेलय। 

They were served food. When they were finished, Jhagru said, “Uncle, I have made a sword, please check it.” Then, like this, Jasar checked the sword with his tongue and the sword bent a bit. He said, “No, this is not new.” He was given the second piece; he checked with his tongue, and it also bent. 

तब तेसर देलकय। एना कऽ देखलकय, कहलकय हँ ई छौ। ई तेगा हौ बढ़िया। हाथ कऽ देलकय। ओहि तेगा लऽ कऽ ई झगरू गरदनि के उड़ा देलकय जासर के। आ ओ गरदनि उड़ा देलकय। आ उ गरदनि उड़लय, धर एनी, गरदनि ओनी कूदय।

Then he was given the third. He saw it, and said, “Yes, this is the one. This sword is good.” And then he [Jasar] gave it to him [Jhagru]. With that sword, Jhagru slashed Jasar’s neck. Slashed the neck. And as the neck [head] flew in the air, the body would jump this side and the neck on the other.

बच्चा भगलय लहूलुहान देह पर भेल। चिचिया कऽ भगलय। बच्चा जे भगलय कि नय चिचिया कऽ, माय लग गेलय। माय गय बाबू के झगरू भैया मारि देलकौअ। आ ऊ झगरू कहलकय कि ओ छौंड़ा कतऽ गेलय से ओकरो मारि देबय। आ ऊ जन्मलय यै जे तेकरो मारि देबय आ ओकरा माय ओ के मारि देबय। 

The children ran away, running over the blood-stained body. They ran, crying in shock. The kids ran and went to their mother. “Hey mother, Jhagru brother killed daddy.” And there Jhagru said, “Where did the child go? I will also kill him. I will also kill the newborn and will also kill his mother.”

ओकर मूड़ी के बरगद गाछमे टाँगि देलकय। जासर के जे मूड़ी रहय आ धर तकरा बरगद गाछमे कऽ टाँगि देलकय। तऽ गौड़ा नाम के से झगरू के बहिन रहय आ जासर के होइतय भतीजी। ऊ चोरा कऽ ऊ जे बतियाइत रहय जे मारि देबय से ऊ गौड़ा दौड़ल दौड़ल एलय आ काकी के कहलकय, काकी गय बौआ के लऽ लही कोरामे आ ओ अल्हा के हाथ पकड़ि लही बौआ के आ भागि जो नै तऽ मारि देतौ सबटा के। हमर भैया कहय छलय।

He hung Jasar’s head from the banyan tree. Jhagru had a sister named Gaura, who would have been Jasar’s niece. When Gaura heard that Jhagru was talking about killing the children, she came running to her aunt and said, “Hello, aunty, take the children by hand, and take Alha’s hand and run away from here; otherwise he will kill everyone. My elder brother was saying this.”

तऽ ऊ देओला, देओला एहन मौगी रहय जे पारा के सात दिन सात राति लड़ाई होइत रहय आ नै फरियाए। आ देओला जाइत रहय ग्वालनि रहय दूध बेचय लै। तऽ कहलकय कि जे यै मर्दावा नय है जे एकरा झगड़ा फरिआ देतय। तऽ कहलकय कि जे तूहीं फरिआ नै दहक। 

Deola was such a woman… a fight ensued somewhere between two male calves of a buffalo and went on for seven days and seven nights, and the fight just wouldn’t resolve. Deola, who belonged to the Gwalni caste, was on her way to sell milk. She saw the fight and said, “Isn’t there a man who can resolve this fight?” Then people said, “Why don’t you settle it yourself?” 

तऽ कहलकय दूध के राखि देलकय आ गेलय एना को फांर बांधि लेलकय आ गेलय आ दुनू पारा के सिंह पकड़ि कऽ तोड़ि देलकय। तऽ सात कोस पारा एकटा एम्हर खसलय आ सात कोस पारा एकटा ओम्हर खसलय। तत्ते दमगर रहय ओइ देओला के। तऽ वैहै देख कऽ राजा से बियाह केलकय।

She put down the milk can there, and tugged her saree. And she caught hold of the two calves’ horns and broke them off. Then one horn fell to this side seven kos [21 kilometers] away and the other that side seven kos away. That is how strong Deola was. So seeing her strength, the king had married her.

तऽ ऊ देओला कि केलकय तऽ भागल बच्चा के कोरामे कऽ खोंइछामे कऽ धऽ लेलक। ओकरा हाथ पकड़ि लेलक आ भागल। जाइत जाइत जे गेल तऽ नदी बहैत रहय। नदीमे नाव चलैत रहय। तऽ नाव चलैत रहय तऽ नावमे जासर नाम के से मल्लाह रहय नाव खेवैत। हँ, जासर नाम के मल्लाह नाव खेवैत रहय। 

Then Deola clutched her child in her lap and hid him in her saree. She took Alha’s hand in her hand and ran from there. As she was going, she saw a river flowing there. And a boat was moving along in that river. So a boat was moving and the boat was being sailed by a fisherman named Jasar.      

तऽ ओकरा कहलकय कनी पार कऽ दियऽ तऽ कहलकय कि जे अहाँ के जे हम पार करब तऽ हमरा तऽ झगरू मारि देत। कहलकय नय बुझत। हम नै कहबय। गोर लगैत छी। अल्हा कहलकय हम जासर के बेटा छी। तऽ कहलकय कि जे पाइ दियौ खेवाइ जे उतारि देब से।

She asked of him, “Please take us to that side.” He replied, “If I take you to that side, Jhagru will kill me.” She said, “No, he won’t know. I won’t tell anyone. Please, I beg you.” Alha said, “I am Jasar’s son.” Then he replied, “Ok, give me money for it and I will take you to that side.” 

तऽ कहलकय कि से पाइ तऽ नै अछि तऽ कहलकय कि हम पाइ तऽ नै लेब अहाँ के लेकिन बच्चा के चिराकी दियौ। बच्चा के चिराकी लय छलय नाव बला। किछु पाइ दियौ। बच्चा के चिराकी दियौ। तऽ किछु नय रहय तऽ एक हाथ के कंगना से दऽ देलकय नबरिया के। पार उतारि देलकय। एक हाथमे कंगना पेननेही रहलय, चलि गेलय।

But she said, “We don’t have any money.” So he answered, “Ok, fine, I won’t require money; but give something from your children.” Back then, boatmen would often take payment in kind or any sort of cash. “Give some money, or give something else.” But she didn’t have anything, so she gave the gold bangles from one wrist to the boatman. He took them to the other side. She kept wearing the gold bangles on one wrist and went off from there.

ओतऽ जे गेलय कि नय जाइत जाइत गेलय जे तऽ एकटा राजा के राजमे जा कऽ रहलय। राजमे रहलयकि नय तऽ ई झगरू पता लगा कऽ ओतऽ चिट्ठी लिख देलकय जे जे कोई रखभी एकरा से हमरासँ लोहा ले। हमरासँ लड़ाई कर। तऽ ऊ भगा देलकय। फेर दोसर राजमे गेलय। फेर ऊहो भगा देलकय। जतऽ जतऽ जाय ततऽ ततऽ ई झगरू कहय जे हमरासँ लड़ तब ओकरा रखही। तऽ ऊ बेला दय। 

As she went along, on her way, she arrived at and stayed in a kingdom. When Jhagru came to know about it, he wrote to that kingdom, “Whoever gives her protection will have to fight with me.” So he sent her away. And so she went to a second kingdom. They also sent her away. Wherever she would go, Jhagru would tell them to fight with him first and then think about providing her with shelter. So they would send her away. 

एनाही भगबैत भगबैत भगबैत भगबैत, जाइत जाइत एकटा बोनमे जाइत रहय। तऽ ऊ बोनमे बाघ सब दौड़लय। बच्चा के कोरा कऽ लेने रहय आ हाथ पकड़ने रहय एकटा बेटा के। बाघ दौड़लय तऽ कहलकय हे नय खाऊ हमरा। हम बड़ बिपतल छी।

Running hither and yon, she eventually arrived at a forest. The tigers there ran after her. She was clutching one of her children in her lap and was holding the other son’s hand. As the tiger ran after her, she cried, “Hello, please don’t eat me. I am experiencing great misfortune.” 

अल्हा कहलकय हम जासर राजा के से बेटा छियय। हमरे ई सबटा बोन छी। बाघ कि केलकय जे बच्चा के एना कऽ कोरा कऽ लऽ लेलकय रूदल के। रूदल बाघ के दूध पीने अइ। कोरा कऽ लऽ लेलकय आ दूध पीबा लेलकय। आ सबटा बाघ के भगा देलकय। कहलकय नय, ई रानी छी हमर, ई राजा के छी। आ ऊ बाघ आ बघिनिया अरियातने अरियातने अरियातने पूरा बोन टपा देलकय, सुरक्षित। 

Alha said, “I am the son of King Jasar. All these forests are our very own.” The tigress took Rudal in her lap like this. Ruda drank the tigress’s milk. She took him in her arms and fed him her milk. And she sent all the tigers away from there. The tigress said, “No, this is our queen, and these are the children of the king.” And the tiger and that tigress saw them to the forest’s edge. 

कहलकय जे ओइ बोन लगसँ गेलय तऽ बड़का ऊँच के पहाड़ रहय। तऽ कहलकय कि जे बौआ रौ चल आब तऽ बाघोसँ बचि गेलैं आ एते दुख नय काटल जाय यै। आब कतऽ जैब? अइ पहाड़ पर कथी खेबैं, कतऽ रहबैं?  

Beyond the forest, there was a giant mountain. She then told her children, “Hey, son, now we have been saved from the tigers, as well, but I can’t bear all this pain anymore. Where should we go now? What should we eat on this mountain and where should we live?”

चल अइ पहाड़ परसँ तोरा आ बौआ के कोरा कऽ लेबय आ तोहर हाथ पकड़ि लेबौ आ गुड़कि जैब। तऽ गुड़कि जैब कि नय तऽ गुड़कति गुड़कति से तीनू गोरा मरि जैब, चल। तऽ ओइ परजँ चढ़ऽ गेलय ऊपरमे जे गेलय तऽ एकटा राजा के किला देखलकय। वैह राजा सैय्यहद के किला देखाइ देलकय झंडा। 

“Let’s go. I will hold your hands in mine and clutch Rudal in my lap and we will roll down the mountain slope. As we roll down, we three will die. Let’s go.” Yet when they got to the top, they saw a king’s fort from there. That King Sayyad’s fort with its flag was visible from there. 

ओइ पहाड़ पर जे चढ़लय गुड़कय लै बच्चा के पकड़ि कऽ नेने गेलय आ ऊ छत पर जे गेलय तऽ देखलकय।

She saw it there as she reached the top of the mountain where she had planned to roll down from its slope to her death.

अल्हा कहलकय माय नय मर। ऊ किला देखय छही चल तऽ ओइ किलामे। ओइ किलामे जे नय रहऽ देतौ तब आबि कऽ मरि जैब अइ परसँ खसि कऽ चल। फेर ओतऽसँ उतरि गेल ओरिया कऽ। ओइ किला पर गेल। ओतऽ गेलय कि नय दस टा दोकान रहय जेना अइ चौक तौक पर रहय छै ने दर दोकान तेहन दोकान। 

Alha said, “Mother, don’t die. See that fort? Let’s go to that fort. If they don’t allow us in that fort, then we can come back and kill ourselves by falling down from here.” So they carefully descended from there. They went to the fort. As they approached, they saw there were shops at the center, as usually exist, shops and facilities. 

दोकान पर जे गेल कि नय तऽ भूख लागल रहय। सबटा दोकान के दुनू माय पूते खा गेल। सबहक दोकान के जे चीज रहय से सबटा खा गेलय। पाइ मांगऽ गेलय। ऊ तऽ रहय ओते टा के मौगी तऽ खा ओ नय ओते। सबटा खा गेलय दुनू माय पूते।

Arriving at a shop, they had become hungry. Mother and son together ate everything in that shop. They ate everything available in all the shops there. When they [the shopkeepers] went to ask them for money, (that woman was so strong so ate that much), mother and child had eaten it all. 

भूखल रहय खा गेलय। तऽ पाइ जे मांगऽ गेलय कि नय तऽ कंगना निकालि कऽ एकटा तऽ दऽ देने ओकरा आ एगो कंगना देलकय। साढ़े चारि लाख के एकटा कंगना रहय। तऽ ओकरा देलकय जे एकरा बेच कऽ अहाँ सब कोई पाइ लऽ लियऽ। हमरा पाइ घुमए यै तऽ घुमा दी। हमरा नय है पाइ। ओइ कंगना लऽ कऽ से ककरा कोन दोकान बला भजौतय। 

Because they were hungry, they had eaten everything. When they went to ask for money, she removed the last of the gold bangles (she had already given one away) and gave it to them. One out of the pair was worth 4.5 lakh rupees. So she gave it to them, saying, “Sell this off and divide the money between you. And if anything extra is due to me, then return that to me. I don’t have cash.” What shopkeeper could possibly take that [something of such great value] and be able to exchange it for cash?   

ओइ कंगना लऽ कऽ कहलकय कि जे राजा लग जो राजा लग दरबारमे। दरबारमे गेलय ऊ कंगना लऽ कऽ जे मुँह देखाइमे देने रहय। सैय्यहद जे देखलकय कहलकय सरकार एकरा बेच कऽ एकरा लियौ अपने आ रूपैया दियौ हमरा सबके। 

They said, “Take this gold bangle and go to the king, in his court.” So they took that gold bangle, which the King himself had given [to Queen Deola] in order to see her face, to the king’s court. When Sayyad saw that… They said, “Lord, sir, please take this, and give us money in return.”  

देखलकय ई तऽ हमर, नाम लिखल रहय राजा सैय्यहद। ई तऽ हम दोस्तिनी के देलियय मुँह देखाइ। के कतऽ देलकौअ? एगो जनाना है, दू गो बच्चा है। हमरा आर दोकानमे खेलकय आ हवै बैठल है। 

King Sayyad saw it and said, “This my…”, his name ‘King Sayyad’ was etched on it. “I had given this to my friend’s wife so I would get to see her face for the first time when she was wed. Who gave this to you and where?” They said, “Sir, there is a woman and two kids. They have eaten in our shops, and they have been sitting there.”

वैहै कहलकय हऽ देलकय एकरा पाइ नय छै। जा कऽ राजा सैय्यहद अपनेसँ दौड़ल गेल देखलक। बच्चा के  पूछलकय, बौआ केकर बेटा छिअऽ? 

“She only said this much; she doesn’t have money.” King Sayyad went  running to see them. He asked the child, “Whose child are you?” 

तऽ हम राजा जासर के बेटा छी मुहबिया राज हमर। चट सन बच्चा के कोरा कऽ उठा लेलक दुनू के हसोइत कऽ। रानी के पठौलक लोक सब अरियाइत कऽ लऽ गेल भीतरमे। कपड़ा लत्ता पहिरा कऽ ओकरा सबके पाइ ताइ दऽ देलकय। फेर सोनार के ऑर्डर देलक अइ कर जोड़ा लगा दय लै कंगना। आब कहलकय जे कियै बौआ एना? तऽ एना एना झगरू भैया बाबू के मारि देलक, एना एना भागल जाय छी हम सब से मरए लै जाय छलियय हम सब।

Alha replied, “I am King Jasar’s son, from Muhibia Kingdom.” He swiftly lifted the child in his lap. He sent for the queen. People brought her inside with respect. He arranged clothes and money and such for them. Next, he ordered the goldsmith to make the other one of her pair of bangles. And then he queried, “How did this come to happen, son?” He replied, “Actually, Jhagru brother killed my father. We were running here and there, and we were going to kill ourselves.”

कहलकय कतौ जाय के नय तोरा। झगरू लिखलकय चिट्ठी ओकरा, सैय्यहद के राजा सैय्यहद के जे एकरा भगा दय लै। तऽ कहलकय जते लड़ए के हेतौ फेर ई लिख देलकय तोरा जते लड़ए के हो तऽ लड़ हम लड़बौ आ हम ओकरा रखबय। आ जते लड़ए के छौ से लड़। कहलकय हम रखबौ। ऊ कहलकय हम रखबौ। 

He said, “You shouldn’t be going anywhere.” Jhagru wrote a letter to King Sayyad to ask him to send them away. But he responded, “Fight as much as you want, but I will keep them here. And fight as much as you want.” He said, “I will keep them.” 

तऽ ऊ अपना संगहि पढ़ए लै स्कूल ओकरा रूदल के अल्हा के… बेटो से बढ़ि कऽ राजा सैय्यहद पढ़ौलकय लिखौलकय अखराहा पर खेलौलकय सबटा करौलकय। अखराहा पर कुश्ती सिखलकय। आ तब जे खूब भऽ गेलय जे हाँ ई कथूमे नय हारतय तऽ ऊ अपने ओइ जां रखने रहय राजा सैय्यहद। 

Then he arranged for their education in school, he arranged for Rudal and Alha to be educated… more than his own son, King Sayyad played with them and got everything done for them. He arranged for them to be trained in wrestling. And until he felt assured that the children could not be defeated in anything, they were kept by King Sayyad. 

त ओकर बहिन गेलय एकटा आ बहिनोई कहय लै जे कि मियां ओइ जांग रहय छैं। मियां ओइ जांग अथी करय छैं। चल हमरा ओइ जांग जे खैब से खैब, रहब।

Then her [Queen Deola’s] sister and her sister’s husband went to convince her, “You are living at a Muslim’s place, doing this at a Muslim’s place, let’s go to my place instead. We will eat and live there.”

तऽ बहिन लऽ गेलय अपना ओइ जांग। आ ओतऽ जा कऽ ओइ बच्चा सबसँ अंगना घर के काज करबय। जरना बिछबय माल-जाल चरबाबय। बहिनसँ धान कूटबाबय, पानि भरिबाबय। बहिनसँ, बहिन लऽ गेलय। देओला के बहिन लऽ गेलय। आ बादमे जा कऽ बड़ लगलय काज धंधा करबय लै।
