एकटा रहैथ राजा। ओ अपना रानीकेँ बड्ड मानथिन आ रानिओ बड्ड मानथिन।
There once was a king. He loved his queen a lot, and the queen also loved him a lot.
आ राजामे कि रहैन खूबी त ओ जानवर के सबके भाषा बुझथिन। चुट्टी ओ तुट्टी के भाषा बूझए छलखिन।
The king had a virtuous ability to understand animals’ languages. He understood even the ant’s language.
तऽ एक दिन राजा रानी बैसल रहथिन फुलवारीमे त एकटा चुट्टी जाइत रहय। दोसर चुट्टी ओम्हरसँ एलय न त ओ सब अपनामे गप्प केलकय।
One day the king and the queen were sitting together in the garden when an ant was passing by. A second ant came from the other side and they talked to each other.
त राजा के त भाषा अबैत रहैन ओकर सबके बोली बूझैत रहथिन त राजा के हँसी लागि गेलनि। राजाकेँ ई शर्त रहैन जे जइ दिन ओ कहि देथिन ककरो जे हम सबहक भाषा बोली बूझए छियय ओ मरि जेता तेँ ओ बातकेँ गुप्त रखने रहैथ।
Now since the king knew their language, understood their speech, he couldn’t resist laughing. The king was bound by the condition that the day he revealed to anyone that, “I understand everybody’s language,” he would die. That’s why he had kept this secret.
तऽ हुनका राजा के हँसी लागि गेलनि। तऽ रानी कहलखिन अहाँ हँसलौं कियै।
But now the king could not hold back his laughter. Then the queen enquired, “Why have you laughed?”
तऽ राजा कहलखिन अहाँ छोड़ू न हम ओहिना हँसलिए।
The king replied, “Never you mind; I laughed for no particular reason.”
रानी कहथिन न किछु तऽ बात जरूर छैक। हमरा कहू अहाँ कियै हँसलौं।
But the queen insisted, “No, there is indeed something. Please tell me why you laughed.”
राजा कहलखिन अरे अहाँ जिद नै करू ने। अहाँ नै बूझए छी। अहाँ नै हमरा जिद करू हम नै कहब।
The king said, “Please do not insist. You do not understand. Please do not force me, I won’t tell.”
नै से तऽ नै हैत।
The queen said, “No, that won’t do.”
अंतमे राजा कहलखिन अहाँकेँ जे हम कहि देब तऽ हम मरि जैब।
At last, the king said, “If I tell you, I will die.”
तऽ कहलखिन आब से जे हुए लेकिन हमरा कहू।
The queen said, “Now, no matter what happens, you have to tell me.”
तऽ राजा कहलखिन आब एहने जिद अइ आ रानी के बड्ड मानथिन एहने जिद अइ अहाँकेँ तऽ ठीक छै मरिओ जैब अहाँकेँ से स्वीकार अइ तऽ ठीक छै चलू।
So the king said, “Now you are insisting such and such…” – and since the king loved her a lot – “…and since you can accept that I will die, fine then, let’s go, I will tell you.”
सबटा आला लश्कर लेलनि अल दलसँ अप्पन विदा भेला जे गंगा कात जैब हम आ ओइ ठाम हिनका कहि देबन आ ओइ ठाम अप्पन मरि जैब हम। रानिओ विदा भेलखिन।
He took all his retinue and men and departed from there, thinking, “I will go to the Ganges River and will tell her and then die there.” The queen went along, as well.
पूरा सब घोड़ा हाथी साजि कऽ चलला ओइ ठामसँ। तऽ रस्तामे गंगाजी दूर रहथिन तऽ रस्तामे एक ठाम से सब डेरा खसेलकय जे अइ राति एतऽ रूकब फेर भोर भेने सब चलय जाइ जैब।
With all the decorated elephants and horses, they started out. But since the Ganges was far away from there, they decided to put up somewhere on their way, conferring, “Tonight we will stay here and in the morning we will leave.”
भोर भेलय ने तऽ राजा निकलला टहलऽ लै अगल-बगल तऽ देखलखिन दू टा खरहा रहय, खरहा नै चाहे बकरी राखू। हँ बकरी रहय दू टा ओइ ठाम, खरहे रहय, खरगोश जकरा कहय छै।
In the morning, the king was out on a walk, and he saw there were two hares in the vicinity. No. Perhaps, it was not rabbits, make them be goats. No, no, it was hares, which are also called rabbits.
तऽ ओ एकटा रहय मेल फीमेल मने नर मादा रहय तऽ ओ कहय कि खरगोशनी कहय कि जे ओ एकटा सुखायल इनार रहय ओइमे हरियर हरियर घास रहय मोलायम घास तऽ खरगोशनी कहय कि जे तू हमरा ओ घास आनि दे।
They were a male and a female. The female rabbit said to the male…there was a dry well there, which had soft green grass at its base… “Hey, go and bring me that grass.”
आ इ खरहा कहय कि जे नै हम ओइमे जैब तऽ खैसि कऽ अथी भऽ जैब न हमरा के निकालत।
The male rabbit replied, ‘No. I won’t go into that, as I will fall down into it, and who will take me out then?”
राजा तऽ बूझैत रहथिन दुनू के दुनूमे जे बात होय।
The king understood what they were talking about.
तऽ ओ कहय जे नै तू हमरा ओइमे सँ जा कऽ ढूक, खस ओइमे आ ओइमे सँ हमरा घास आनि कऽ दे आ हमरा नीक लगय यै ओ हमरा खै के मोन होय यै।
She replied. “No, go down into it, fall into it and bring me grass from there. I like it, and I want to eat that.”
ओ कहय तू बात नय बूझए छही हम खसब फेर हम मरि जैब ओइमे ने।
The male rabbit said, “You are not understanding. If I go down there, I will die.”
तऽ कहलकय से कि हेतय मरबैं तऽ मरबैं लेकिन हमरा आनि दे।
She retorted, “So what? Die if you think you must, but bring it to me.”
राजा सबटा सुनि रहल छथि।
The king was listening to everything.
तऽ कहय छै कि ओ खरहा, गे तू हमरा ओ राजा बूझलैं हैं, मारबौ हम एखने हम। हिनका दुआरे हम अप्पन जान दऽ दिय। आ ओकरा मुड़ीसँ ढ़ाहि देत ओकरा ठेल देलकय।
Then the male rabbit said, “Hey, do you think I am like that king? I will beat you. Huh! For this lady, I should die? No way.” And he pushed her away by the head.
राजा के आँखि खुजि गेलय।
This was an eye-opener for the king.
कहलकय हम राजा ऊ नै छी जे राजा रानी दुआरे अप्पन जान देबऽ एलय हय, केहन बकलेल राजा छै।
The male rabbit said, “I am not that king who has come to die here because of the queen. What an idiot this king is.”
राजा तऽ सुनैत रहैथ सबटा, गेला रानी के कहलखिन चलू अहाँ घर पर हम नै कहब अहाँकेँ। अहाँकेँ जे करऽ के हुए से करू।
The king was listening to everything, so he went to tell the queen, “Let’s go home now, I have decided not to tell you. Go, do whatever you will.”
तहन ई कहलखिन नै एना कोना हेतय से हमरा कहू ।
Then the queen said, “No, this cannot be; you must tell me.”
कहलखिन बेसी जिद करब तऽ देखय छियय, बस तहन शांत।
He replied, “If you insist too much, see this?” And with that she calmed down.
गेला राजा के जान बचलय।
They left. The king’s life was saved.
