एकटा रहै बोनिहार, मजदूर।
There once was a farm labourer.
ऊ खेत पर काज करऽ जाइत रहै। ओकर जमाय एलय।
He was going to work in the field. His son-in-law arrived.
सासुर नै अबय छै, सासुर एलय जमाय।
As you know, sons-in-law often visit their in-law’s place, so the son-in-law arrived.
एलय नै त दू चारि दिन रही गेलय।
Since he had come, he decided to stay for some two to four days.
त कहलकय कि आयल मेहमान एलय त अपन घर जइतय ने ई एतऽ आबि कऽ बैसि गेल।
Now, he [the father-in-law] said to himself, “Fine that the guest came and stayed, but by now he should have left; instead it looks like he has settled here.”
त कहलकय कि जे, सोचलक कि जे नै बैसि कऽ कते दिन खैत से एकरा जहन ई रहल है तहन त ई काज करत अइ ठाम।
He said, “No, now how long he would just sit and relax here, so if he really is going to stay here, let him do some work as well.”
जाय लागल ने खेत पर त कहलकय कि कनिया के हय हम जाय छी आगु मेहमान के कहियैं जे खेत पर आयत हमरा संगहि काम करत।
As he began to prepare to go to the field, he told his wife, “Hey, listen, I am going to the field, so tell our guest to go to the field and work with me.”
कहलकय ठीक छै। बेचारा अपन असताति पछताति गेल।
She said, “Okay.” And so the poor chap went to the field unwillingly.
पहिने भोरे जलखय भेट जाइत रहय, जलखयो नै भेटलनि।
Previously he would get his breakfast in the morning, but now he wouldn’t get it at all.
गेल खेत पर ने तऽ काजो करै, अबेर भऽ गेलय ग्यारह बाजि गेलय त जिम्हर बाटे आयल रहै तिम्हरे उम्हर उनटि उनटि कऽ देखै जे जलखय कखन आयत।
Since he was going to the field, he might as well put in some work as well. It became late, it was 11 o’clock now and he would keep looking back to the route he had taken in anticipation of his breakfast.
एकरा भूख लागि गेलय। ग्यारह बजे के बाद देखलकय साउस के थोड़े अल्हुआ आ नोन लऽ कऽ आ एक गिलास पानि लऽ कऽ चल अबैत।
He was hungry now. After 11, he saw his mother-in-law coming with some sweet potatoes and salt, with a glass of water.
एलय साउस तऽ हांय हांय कऽ कि केलक पहिने अल्हुआ के से ससुरो अपन जलखय करऽ लगलय, ईहो ।
Once she arrived, he hurriedly began eating breakfast first, and his father-in-law also began eating breakfast.
एकरा बड्ड भूख लागल रहय। अल्हुआ देखलकय हांय हांय कऽ ओ बिना सोहने अल्हुआ
हांय हांय कऽ नै नोन लगबऽ लगलय दस टा अल्हुआ पहिने खा लेलक, खा लेलक तकरा बाद पेट भरि गेलय ने तखन अल्हुआ सोहै आ तहन फेर ओइमे नोन ओ लगबै तखन पूछय ससुर के कि, बाबू, एम्हर कोन गाम छै?
He was very hungry. The moment he saw sweet potatoes, he began eating without peeling or salting them, and he ate 10 pieces first. After he ate his fill, he then began peeling them and putting salt on them, and asked his father-in-law, “Father, which village is over yonder?”
पेटमे गेलय त, बाबू, ओम्हर कोन गाम छै?
The father-in-law replied, “Now that you have eaten your fill you are asking, ‘Father, which village is over yonder?’”
ससुर कहय कि रौ तोरी के तहन तोरा भूख लागल रहौ तहन त तोरा खाली एके दिस तकय छलैं जे कोन बाटे जलखय आयत।
The father-in-law said, “See here, when you were hungry, you were looking in just one direction, thinking, ‘by which way will my breakfast arrive?’”
आब तोरा पूबो देखाइ छौ पश्चिमो देखाइ छौ, सवाल करय छैं तू हमरासँ।
“Now you are able to see both to the east, and to the west, and you are asking me questions!”
तऽ कहलकय नै बूझलहक मेहमान ओ भेलय बिन सोहलपुर आ ओ भेलय सोहलपुर।
The father-in-law continued, “Don’t you get it, my guest, that side is the village named ‘Binasohalpur’ [’unpeeled settlement’] and that side’s village is named ‘Sohalpur’ [‘peeled settlement’].”
जखन तोरा भूख लागल छलौ तहन तोरा किछो नै सूझय छलै आब तू सोहि सोहि कऽ अल्हुआ खाय छऽ आ हमरासँ सवाल जवाब करय छऽ।
“When you were hungry, you were not seeing anything; now you are eating sweet potatoes after peeling them, and then posing me with queries and answers.”
