एकटा महिला रहै, मौगी रहै। ओ बहुत अपना घरवाला के मानैत रहै।
There once was a woman. She loved her husband a lot.
घरवाला ओकर जे रहय ने से ओकरा पूरा देहमे कोढ़िया रहय बिमारी रहय त ओकरा चलल नै होयत रहय।
Her husband was suffering from leprosy, so he could not walk.
गाममे न से एक दिन बहुत पैघ नाच होयत रहय त सब जाय देखय लै त कोढ़िया कहलकय कि जे गय कनिया के कहलकय कि जे हमहूँ जैब।
In the village, a great dance gala was being held, and everybody was going to watch it. And so, the man asked his wife, “Hey, I, too, would like to go.”
त कहलकय अच्छा ठीक छै अहाँकेँ जे मोन होय यै ने त हम अहाँकेँ दिनमे केना लऽ जैब राति कऽ होय छै न हम अहाँकेँ रातिमे लऽ जैब।
To which she replied, “Ok, sure, if you want to go, I will take you in the evening, as how can I possibly I take you there during the day.”
ई मौगी गरीब रहय कियैक त घरवाला कमाए नै आ एकरा त सब पूरा टाइम ओकरे परिचर्चामे बीत जाए।
This woman was poor, because the husband would not work, and she spent her entire time taking care of him.
ओकर कपड़ा बदलय, ओकर घाव साफ करय, ओकरा खेनाइ बना कऽ खुअबय त गरीब रहय।
She would change his clothes, clean his wounds, and cook for him; so she was poor.
तैयो ई कहलकय कि ने हम जैब देखऽ लै, त रातिमे कि केलकय ई अइ पर लऽ लेलकय ओकरा घरवाला के अइ पर बैसा लेलक आ जा कऽ देखऽ लगलय।
Nonetheless he insisted, “No, I will go to watch.” Then she hoisted her husband onto her shoulders in the evening and went to see the programme.”
ताबतमे मेघ उठलय, ई कहलकय कि घरवाला के चलू पानि हेतय से चलू आब घर चलू।
Suddenly, clouds appeared in the sky. She said to her husband, “Let’s go, it is about to rain, let’s go, go home now.”
ओ कहय नै हमरा बड्ड नीक लगय यै नाच देखऽमे हम देखब तऽ ईहो मौगी अप्पन ठाढ़ भऽ गेल।
But he objected, “I very much like to watch the dancing.” Then the woman also remained standing there.
बड़ी रात कऽ नाच खत्म भेलय त ओ मौगी कि केलक त कन्हा पर अइ पर लेलकय घरवाला के फेर अबैत रहै त रस्तामे बिहारि पानि आबि गेलय।
The dance programme got over lae in the evening. The woman hoisted her husband onto her shoulders and was returning home when it began to rain.
एकटा गाछ लगमे से ई ठाढ़ भऽ गेल। ओकरा कपड़ा नै रहय त अपन देह के साड़ी लऽ कऽ आ घरवाला के एना कऽ झांपि देलकय घाव पर गर्दा नै पड़य आ अपने बेचारी अथी भऽ कऽ कपड़ा नै रहय देह पर ठाढ़ भऽ गेल।
She took cover under a tree. She didn’t have cloth to cover her husband’s wounds, so she took her saree off and covered her husband’s wounds so that dust wouldn’t get into it. And the poor woman was somehow trying to cover herself, as well, by hiding under the tree.”
ठाढ़ भऽ गेल आ गाछ के औढमे एना कऽ ठाढ़ भऽ गेल।
She stood and tried to hide herself under the tree.
तऽ बिहारि जे होय न तब गाछ हिलय से इंद्रासन डोलि गेलय।
Then, as the storm was coming, it shook the seat of God Indra.
इंद्र भगवान के आसन डोलि गेलनि।
Lord Indra’s seat got shaken.
सब भेलय जे एना कियैक डोलि रहल यै पता कैल गेल त पता लगलय कि एकटा ई पातिव्रता स्त्री जे छथि से ओइ ठाम अपन कपड़ा देह परसँ उतारि कऽ दऽ देलखिन हैं आ लोक लाजसँ उ निकलि नै रहल
छथि ओइ ठामसँ।
Everyone wondered, “Why is Lord Indra’s seat shaking?” So people searched around to find the reason, and then it became clear: “A virtuous wife is standing under a tree. She has taken off her clothes to cover her husband, and is not coming out for the sake of respecting her honour.”
आब जेती कोना तइ दुआरे तांइ इंद्रासन डोलि रहल है।
“How could she possibly go now? That’s why Lord Indra’s seat is shaking.”
त स्वर्गसँ एलनि विमान हुनका लेल आ ओइ पर बैसि कऽ दुनू व्यक्ति स्वर्ग चलि गेलखिन।
Then a vessel came from heaven to pick her up and both wife-husband went to heaven in that vessel.
Maithili Transcript
