एकटा रहैन ब्राहमण त ओ नै से भीख मंगैत रहैत।
There once was a Brahmin, and he was begging.
हुनका सात टा धिया पूता रहैन सात टा बेटी रहैन।
He had seven children, seven daughters.
हुनका कि रहैन एक गाँव मंगय छलाह है तैयो एके तामा होयन, एक तामा मतलब एक सेर, आ सात गाँव घूमि कऽ मंगय छलाह है तैयो एके तामा होयन, आ सात टा बेटी रहैन, अपने रहैथ आ घरवाली रहथिन, त ऊ सबटा कनिए कनिए कऽ होयन, पेट नै भरैन।
What he faced actually was that he would get one tama of grains, meaning one ser [approx 1 kg], if he begged in one village, and again a only one tama even if he begged in seven villages. And he had seven daughters, himself and his wife, so he would not get enough to eat. He would get just a little to eat and his stomach wouldn’t be full.
एक दिन कि सोचलनि दुनू ब्राहमण आ ब्राहमणी आइ कि करब सातो के सुता देबय आ रातिमे बढ़ियासँ बनैब आ दुनू आदमी खैब।
One day, the Brahman husband and wife thought that what they would do is to put their seven daughters to sleep and then cook an excellent dinner and eat it.
एकटा बेटी ओइमे से सुनि लेलकय जे दुनू आइ ई से गप कऽ रहल अइ, कि केलक सातो बेटी सुतऽ लागल ने एकटा बारहैन लऽ कऽ सुति रहल। एकटा सूप लऽ कऽ सुति रहल। एकटा समाठ लऽ कऽ नुका देलकय आ सुति रहल। एकटा भात के बरतन लऽ कऽ सुति रहल आ एकटा करछ लऽ कऽ सुति रहल।
One of the daughters heard what they were saying, and what she did was to pick the broom and sleep with it; another picked the cleaning tray and slept with it; another picked the grinder and hid it with her as she slept. Another took the rice-making pot and slept with it, and another picked the lentil-lifting utensil and slept with it.
अहिना सब चीज लऽ कऽ सब सुति रहल।
In this manner, they went to sleep having taken all of the things.
आ सब सुति रहलय जहन रातिमे आ सब रहय जगले तऽ इनका ब्राहमण ब्राहमणी के भेलनि जे ई सब सुति रहल हैत चुपेचाप उठली ब्राहमणी आ गेली अथी करय लै जे कनी बहारि सोहारि कऽ भानस चढ़ैब त कनिए जोरसँ बजलखिन कि, जा बारहैन कि भेलय?
And when they all went to sleep that night, but actually they all remained awake, these two, the Brahmin husband and wife, thinking that they’d gone to sleep, they thought about mopping and cleaning the place and beginning to cook. The wife asked loudly, “Oh, where is the broom?”
एकटा बैटी उठि गेलनि कहय छै माय गे हइया छौ बारहैन।
One daughter woke up and said, “Mom, the broom is right here.”
ओकरा कहलखिन चुप चुप नै बाज ओहो सब उठि जेतौ।
She then told her daughter, “Hey, shush, don’t speak, lest they all wake up.”
हँ फेर कने काल के बाद कहलखिन कि जे अथी कहाँ छै भात बला बरतन कतऽ छ?
Right, so after some time, she again said, “Where is the rice-making pot?”
दोसर कहय छै माय गे हइया छियौ हइया हइया छियौ ।
The second daughter said, “Mom, here it is, here.”
ओकरा कहलखिन चुप चुप नै बाज, चारि आदमी छी ने खा लेब बढ़ियासँ।
She then told her daughter, “Hey, shush, don’t speak, we are just four people, we will have enough to eat.”
फेर भेलनि जे करछ लऽ कऽ भात लारब तऽ कहलखिन, करछ कि भेलय?
Again as she felt the need to get the lentil-lifting, rice-stirring utensil to stir the rice, she asked, “Where is the karachh?”
कहय छै माय हइया छौ।
Another daughter responded, “Mom, here it is.”
तेसर बेटी उठि गेलनि।
The third daughter woke up.
अहिना करैत करैत क्यो छोलनी लऽ कऽ तऽ क्यो नोन लऽ कऽ अहिना कऽ सब हइया छौ हइया छौ कऽ कऽ सातो उठि गेलनि।
One after another, somebody with a vegetable mixing utensil, somebody else with salt, all seven, saying “Here it is, here it is,” got up.
ब्राहमण ब्राहमणी कहलखिन जो रे लिखलाहा बांटि छिट कऽ हुनका खै पड़लनि।
The Brahmin husband and wife said, “Huh, our fate.” And they had to share the food with all seven daughters.
तऽ ई खिस्सा हमराpri बूझल अछि।
So, I understood this story.
Maithili Transcript
