King Janak’s sacrificial bow. Shiva had given that to him. Bhola Baba. Lord Shiva had given him only one piece. That bow was very heavy. Nobody could break that, lift that. So he would keep it at home and worship it.

Once there occurred a famine in Janakpur. It didn’t rain. The crop of paddy couldn’t grow because it didn’t rain. Then his citizens convened a meeting one day. They said, “If the King himself held the handle of the plow, it would rain. The plow was usually pulled by the oxen, but if he held the plow handle with his hands, it would rain.”

As the citizens told him this, preparations happened next morning. Now the King would go to plough the field. Then he went to Sitamarhi to plough, the current name of the district that is there. He went there to plough. Then he ploughed two rows, means went ploughing to the other side two times.

As he began to go for the third time, the plow got stuck midway.
रुकि गेलय, फार जे ओइ में रहय जे धरती के कोरय, ओइ फार में लग में एकटा बच्चा, बालिका एतेटा कानs लगलयl उ हर छोड़ि देलखिनl ओइ बचिया के कोरा कs उठा लेलखिनl
Stuck, the blade of the plow, which actually cuts the soil, came across a child, a girlchild, this much, started weeping there. He left the plow. And picked up that girlchild in his lap.
कोरा कs उठा कs गमछा सs झाम्पि कs एलखिन अपना दरबार मेंl हुनका तs बाल बच्चा नइ रहैन राजा जनक केl उ अपना पत्नी से कहलखिन जे, “लियs हम कि अनलीl हैया देखियो देखियो हम कि अनली हsl” उ कहलखिन जे, “लाऊ अइ में के धs दियsl”
Lifting, and wrapping, and covering her with a towel, came to his court. He didn’t have a child; King Janak. He told his wife, “Take it, see what I have brought. Look here, look here, what have I brought.” She said, “Bring, put it here.”

He put her there, that girlchild was Janki jji.She had emerged out of the plow’s blow. He caressed her, loved her a lot, wrapping her there. He became very elated. He began nurturing her. That child was so small the other day, and has grown up so much today. And, day after the child began walking.
उ तs भगवान रहथिन,आदि शक्ति जगदंबाl हुनकर तs शक्तिये अलग रहैनl तs उ हुनका जब पांच साल के भेलखिन, पांच साल के, हाँ तब हुनका से फूल तोsड़ि कs अनथिन फूलवारी में सेl बाबूजी जे हुनकर पूजा कैरतथिन, जनक जी, ओइ घर के रोज लिपाइ पोताइ करथिनl अइ हाथे उ धनुष के उठा लेथिन जे कि ओइ धनुष में बड शक्ति रहयl कोई ओकरा उठा नइ सकय छलयl लेकिन उ पांच साल के बच्चा ओइ धनुष के उठा लयl हाँ, अइ हाथे उठा लयl
She was a Goddess, Jagdamba, the divine power. Her power was totally different in nature. When she turned five, she would go to the garden and pluck flowers and bring it home. Her father, Janak ji, would worship, she would clean and plaster (with cow dung) that room every day. She would lift the bow (with her left hand) just like that, the bow that was so powerful. Nobody could have lifted that. But that five-year-old kid could lift that. Yes, she would lift with this (left) hand.
तs एक दिन से राजा जनक से कहीं से घूमैत फिरैत एलखिनl उ देख लेलखिन जे आइ पूजा में कियs हमरा मने उ नहा कs चलि एलखिन, ओइ दिना जानकी जी घर के लिपाइ पोताइ में कनी देरी कs देलखिनl संगी साथी में, सखी सहेली में लाsगि गेलखिनl
One day King Janak came walking from somewhere. He saw that today for worship (things are not arranged), so he came back after taking bath, that day Janki ji delayed the cleaning of the room a bit. She got busy with her friends.
उ गेलखिन तs देखइ छथिन हबड़ हबड़ कs उ लिपइ छथिनl आ अइ हाथे एना कs धनुष के उठेने आ अइ हाथे घर के निपैतl हुनका बहुत आश्चर्य भs गेलन जे जइ धनुष के भगवान भोला बाबा हमरा देलैथ जे कोन केहन केहन बलवान नइ उठा सकइ छलs तकरा इ पांच साल के हमर बेटी धनुष के मामूली ढंग से उठा लेने रहैl कोनो ओकरा ओकर अथी नइ छै जे इ भारी है की किl
When he came there, he saw that she was hurriedly cleaning and plastering the room. And in her this (left) hand, she had the bow, and with the other she was plastering the room. He was astonished, “The bow that had been granted to me by Lord Bhola Baba, no matter how powerful men be there nobody could have lifted that, but this five-year-old daughter of mine has lifted it just like that. She has no sense of awe about it.”
ओ तखनी उ प्रण केलखिन जे जे वीर अइ धरती पर अइ धनुष के तोड़ि देतय तेकरे से हम सीताजी की विवाह करबन, विवाह करबनl तs मैथिली में, मैथिली में हर जोतय वाला के सीत कहल जाइ छैl तs तांइ ओइ सीत के नस में से ओइ में से जे उ भिड़ल रहथिन तs हुनकर नाम सीता पड़लनl
That very moment he vowed that the brave on this earth who will break this bow would only be married to Sita. In Maithili, the person who ploughs is called ‘Seet’. That’s why she was named Sita because she had touched a Seet’s (King Janak here) vein. So she was named Sita.
जानकी जी के सीता नाम पड़लनl हाँ, तs उ कि केलैथ तs जब उ भेलखिन विवाह लायक ग्यारह साल के भेलखिन तs राजा जनक के हुनकर विवाह के चिंता लागि गेलनl गाम गाम खबर पहुंचा देलखिनl देश देश खबर पहुंचा देलखिन जे सब वीर जमा होऊl जनकपुर में धनुष यज्ञ होइ वाला छै, स्वयंवर, सीता स्वयंवर धनुष यज्ञl जे वीर इ धनुष तोड़ता तिनके सs सीता के विवाह हेतैनl
Janki ji’s name was given as Sita. Yes, what he did then, King Janak started worrying for her marriage when she turned 11, the marriageable age. Message was sent to villages after villages. He got the message conveyed to country after country that “all the Braves please be gathered (over here). A bow sacrifice (here competition) is being organized, a competition for winning a girl. Competition for Sita, bow sacrifice. The brave who breaks the bow will be married to Sita.”
सुनि कs गाम गाम से लोक, राजा सब जमा हुअs लगलैतl मामूली आदमी के आयतl जखन कि लंका से लंकापति रावण भी ओतs सेहो उपस्थित भs गेलखिन जे हमरा से वीर के हैतl धनुष हम तोड़ब आ सीता के विवाह कs कs हम लैबl उहो पहुँच गेलखिनl
Hearing this, people and Kings from villages after villages started gathering there. Who ordinary person will come. Even the King of Lanka, Raavan, came there, thinking that can there be any more brave than him. I will break the bow and I will bring Sita after marrying her. He also reached.
तब विश्वामित्र, विश्वामित्र मुनि जे रहथिन ने से यज्ञ के लेल दुनु भाई के राजा दशरथ से अयोध्या जी से मांsगि कs अंन्ने रहथिनl राजा दशरथ के दुनु पुत्र रहथिनl तs हुनका से वीर तs कोई नयl उ तs मानव रूप धेने रहथिन, रहथिन तs नर रूप नारायणl
Then Vishvamitra, Saint Vishvamitra, had asked for and had brought the two brothers from Ayodhya’s King Dasrath for the event. Both were King Dasrath’s son. Nobody more brave than them. He (Ram) was in his human incarnation, but he was actually Lord Vishnu in human form.
तs हुनका दुनु के अंन्ने रहथिन अपना यज्ञ के रक्षा के लेलl तारिका जे रहय राक्षणी से हुनका यज्ञ में बाधा करैनl तs उ दुनु भाई के मांsगि कs अंन्ने रहथिन जे इ दुनु भाई हमरा यज्ञ के रक्षा करता दियsl तs उ आनि क रखलखिनl हुनको खबर एलन जे जनकपुर में सीता स्वयंवर होइ वाला हैl कहलखिन दुनु भाई के जे चलु हमरा संगे अहुँ सब सीता स्वयंवर देखs के लेल जनकपुरl
So he had brought them for his oblation’s safety. Taarka, the female demon, would often disturb his oblation. So he had brought the two brothers asking (from Long Dasrath) that they would protect his oblation. So he brought and kept them there. He also received the message that a competition for Sita is about to happen in Janakpur. He asked the two brothers, “Come along to Janakpur to watch the competition for Sita.”
दुनु भाई विदा भेला मुनि संगेl रास्ता में पत्थर के एगो शिला रहय राखलl पूर्व में लिखल रहय जे अहि दs कs दुनु भाई जेथिनl आ गौतम मुनि के पत्नी स्वामी के पति के श्राप से पत्थर के शिला बनि गेल रहथिनl तs इहै दुनु भाई जे अइ रास्ता सs गुजरथिन ने तs लात सs मारथिन तs उ पत्थर के शिला जे है से मनुष्य रूप में से ओइ ठमान ठार भs जेतय l
Both brothers started off with the Saint. A piece of stone was lying on their way. It was already written that both brothers will be going this way. And Saint Gautam’s wife had become a stone as the result of her husband’s curse. As these two brothers would pass through this way, they would hit that stone with their foot, the stone then will stand up there in human form.
तs राम जाइत रहथिन दुनु भाईl तs मुनि के पुछलखिन, जे मुनि, अंतर्यामी रहथिन, जानैत उ रहथिन जे इ पत्थर के शिला के छियय लेकिन बजलखिन नइl तs कहलखिन मुनि, इ पत्थर के शिला केहन छियय? कहलखिन अहाँ जग के रचs वाला अहाँ हमरा पुछय छी जे इ पत्थर के शिला के छथिनl
Ram, both brothers were going (that way). He asked the Saint about it, the Saint who was omniscient and knew who this stone was actually but didn’t reveal. He then asked, “Saint, what is this stone here?” The Saint replied, “You are the creator of this world, and you are asking me who this stone is!”
अहाँ हुनका उद्धार करियौनl तs राम हुनका लात से छू देलखिन एना कs, ओ पत्थर के शिला मनुष्य के रूप में से ओइ ठमान खड़ा हो कs हुनका कल जोड़लखिन, साष्टांग दंडवत केलखिनl तs ओइ जs सs जे आगे बढ़लखिन हs तब गेलखिन हs जनकपुरl
“You please relieve her.” Then Ram touched her, and then the stone stood up in human form and bowed before him, offered a full 180-degree flat greeting lying on earth. As he moved on from that place, then he reached Janakpur.
जनकपुर में बैठल छथिन फुलवारी में गुरू मुनि के लेल गेलखिन हs फूल लोढ़s के लेलl तब गुलाब के फूल जे छै से ओइ साइड राम छथिन, अइ साइड सीताl तs अइ साइड हुनका ओइ फूल में जहाँ हाथ बढ़बै छथिन तोड़s के लेल तs राम के रूप देखाइ दइ हं ओइ फूल मेंl आ राम जे तोड़s चाहय छथिन तs ओइ साइड सs हुनका सीता के मुँह देखाइ दइ हंl
(Sita) was sitting in the garden to pick flowers for her Master-Saint. Then on this side of a rose plant was standing Sita, and on the other, Ram. Then as she extends her hand to pluck a flower, she sees the image of Ram in that flower. And the one which Ram wants to pluck, he sees Sita’s image in that (flower) from that side.
बूझलियय, तब दुनु आदमी के, दुनु गोटा के दर्शन भs गेलनl आब हम संक्षेपे में मने कहय छीl वर्णन तs बड़ी टा के छैl रामायण के अंते नइ अइl हाँ, तs ओइ जs सs, ओइ जs से फेर गेलखिन हs मुनि के संग धनुष यज्ञ देखs के लेलl तs जखन सब वीर धनुष के उठबइ छथिन, किनको बुते धनुष एक रत्ती सुई के नोक बराबर नइ हिललय यैहl
Got it? Then both had a glimpse of each other. Now I will narrate in brief only. The description is very long. Ramayan is unending. Yes, so from there he went to watch the event along with the Saint. Then as all the brave men (tried to) lift the bow, none of them could move it beyond even the tip of a needle.
जब नइ हिललन हs तब जानकी जी के मै जे छथिन से करुणा करय छथिन, रोदन जे हमरा बेटी के लेल से अइ पृथ्वी पर से बुझाई यैह मने बर नइ छयl हमर बेटी कुमारेे रहि जैतl कुमारेे रहि जैत हमर बेटीl तब हुनका जे छै से मुनि कहय छथिनl हुनका छोट भाई के इ बात बहुत लाsगि गेलन हैं जे हमरा भैया से वीर के हयl लेकिन छोट रहथिन ने तs उ चुप रहलखिनl
When not moved, Janki ji’s mother started crying, weeping, “It seems as if there exists no husband on this earth for my daughter. My daughter only would remain unmarried. My daughter would remain unmarried?” Then the Saint asked her, “His younger brother has taken an offence on this talk, he asks who after all is brave than his elder brother.” But since he was younger, so he kept silent.
आखिर बड़ा के तs लोक महत्व दइ छय नेl जे मुनि जे कहथिन से करथिन, हम कियै कहियय जे भैया अहाँ तोड़ि दियौl तs मुनि कहलखिन जे राम अहाँ उठु आ इ धनुष के अहाँ तोड़ुl सीता के विवाह अहाँ सs हेतन लिखल छैनl अहाँ जनक जी के जी इ आक्रोश छन अंदर एकरा अहाँ निकाइल दियौनl
After all people respect their elders. “Whatever the Saint decides will happen, why should I say that brother you break the bow?” (said the younger brother.) Then the Saint said, “Ram, you go and break this bow. Sita will be married to you, this is written. You take out the anguish that Janak ji has in his heart.”
राम उठलखिन हsl राम उठलखिन हsl धनुष के उठेलखिनl छुइते धनुष चारि खंड भs गेलयl एक खंड बाबा बैद्यनाथ जे छथिन उंहा गिर पड़लयl दोसर खंड जगन्नाथ पुरी मेंl तेसर खंड जे छै से धनुषा में आ चारिम खंड जनकपुर धाम में जत्तs सीता के भेलन विवाह राम सेl
Ram stands up. Ram stands up. He picks up the bow. With his mere touch, the bow breaks into four pieces. One piece flies off to Baba Baidyanath’s place. The second piece flies off to Jagannathpuri. The third piece to Dhanusha, and the fourth piece remained there at the place in Janakpur Dham where Sita’s marriage with Ram took place.
