There once was a King. He had two daughters.He kept one daughter safe into an earthen vessel marked for rice, and the other one…when both his daughters grew up, he kept one daughter safe into the earthen vessel marked for rice and the other one into the earthen vessel marked for sesame seeds. Both his daughters grew. One of his daughter’s name was Chaurbhuski and another was Tilmajain; he had two daughters.
एकर बाद बियाह के टाइम भेलै त राजा अपन वर तकला। त चाउरभुसकी त उनकर बड़ अथी रहथीन मने गोर नारि रहथीन हां आ तिलमाझन सुदंर रहथीन। हां त ओ सुदंर रहथीन। हां त राजा के त बियाह केलैन ओ चाउरभुसकी के बियाह भेलए। ठीक भेलए ओकर आ बियाह केलकय ओ तिलमाझन स। हां, त ओकरा कि केलक तिलमाझन के मारि देलक ओ बहिन जे रहै चाउरभुसकी। हां त ओकर बियाह ठीक भेलए त ओ कपड़ा लता पहिर क चलि गेल। ओ चलि गेल चाउरभुसकी, हां। हां तिलमाझन के, ओकर बियाह नइ भेलए आ ओकर बियाह भ गेलए ओकरा मारि देलक।
When the time arrived for them to marry, the King found a suitable boy for one of the daughters. Chaurbhuski was very fair and such, and Tilmajain was extremely good-natured. The wedding was fixed for Tilmajain but it was Chaurbhuski who ultimately ended up marrying the boy after killing Tilmajain, her sister.
त राति में से ओ ताके से बर ताके जे ठीक भेल रहे तिलमाझन स आ इ चाउरभुसकी रहे। तकरा कि केलक त जखैन कि बारह बजे राति होए तखैन इ जे रहै चाउरभुसकी गै तते दिन का खिस्सा रहे छै जे मोन ओ नइ रहै छै।
After Chaurbhuski’s wedding, every midnight, Tilmajain would look for the boy who had now become her sister’s husband.
तखन हुनका चानन के गाछ रहैन दरवजा पर। त ओइ गाछ पर से ओ तिलमाझन कहथीन, ” तिलमाझन घूमे डारि डारि, चाउरभुसकी भोगे राज। आ एहन राजा चित के भुलल, आ चिनहबो ने करे साइर। ” ओ कहि दै। त सब दिन के कहे। त एक दिन से ओइठमा जेते लोग सुतै अथी सब से कहै सब सुने सब के डर होए जे कि बात छै जे ऐना इ सब राति क कहै छै। तखन एक दिन कहलकन इ सब आदमी सचेत भ क रहै आ ओकरा अथी केलक जाल स गाछ के बझेलक, हाँ त ओकरा पकड़लक तखन ओकरा पुछलकए त कहलकय जे हम छी तिलमाझन। हमरा हिनका स बियाह ठीक भेल रहै। तखन जे हुनकर मुंह उघारि क देखलख त ओ रहथीन ओ चाउरभुसकी।
There was a sandalwood tree in front of the King’s palace. Tilmajain’s ghost would climb up the tree every midnight and sing – “Tilmajain swings branch to branch, Chaurbhuski lives a queen’s life. What a King who lost his sense, and won’t even recognize his sister-in-law.” Every night she would sing this chorus. One eventful night, some people who were fast asleep heard this and got frightened. They were puzzled as to why this all was happening. Thus they decided to remain vigilant next time and catch hold of the person who sang this chorus. They did so and discovered that it was indeed somebody who sang this chorus. That person then revealed that it was she who was supposed to be wed to the groom. Then the people over there uncovered the bride’s face and saw that it was Chaurbhuski who had actually tricked her way into marrying the groom by killing Tilmajain, her very own sister.
नीक ओ नइ रहथीन, नीक यै रहथीन।
It was she who was the good one, not the other one, they said.
तैं ओ कहलखिन ने सुंदर, एको बेर कारी नइ कहलखिन।
That’s why she (the narrator) said ‘beautiful’, and didn’t say even once that she was dark.
