एकटा गिलहड़ी और चूहा दुन्नु दोस्त छलै, खूब दुन्नु में दोस्ती छलैयऽ ।
Once there were a squirrel and a mouse. The two were friends, very close friends.
दुनु एकै जगह बेसै छलै ।
They would sit next to each other.
बात करै छलै ।
They would chat.
एक दिन बैसल छलै ।
One day they were sitting together.
तऽ बाते करैत करैत करैत दुन्नु में अपनै पर बात भौ गेलै कि, “चल…चलू दोस्त आहाँ नीक छी, कि हम नीक छी ?”
While they were chatting with each other, they began talking about themselves, “Come …come, friend, tell me whether you are better than me, or whether I am better than you?”
तऽ गिलहड़ी कहल्खिन, “नैय्यो, आहाँ सॅ नीक हम छी ।” “नै,” कहल्खिन गिलहड़ी, “हम तऽ बड्ड नीक छी ।”
Then the squirrel responded, “No, I am better than you.” “No,” the squirrel said, “I am indeed very good.”
तऽ चूहा कहल्खिन, “नै, आहाँ सॅ नीक हम छी ।”
To which the mouse replied, “No, I am better than you.”
तऽ कहल्खिन, “से केना ?”
So, he challenged in reply, “How so?”
“आ, तऽ हम ऐय दुआरे नीक छी जे हम तऽ गणेशजी के…” चूहा…मतलब…इ कहल्खिन चूहा जे “हँ, हँ, हम जे छी से हम तऽ गणेशजी के अथी में छी, हुन्कर सवारी में छी, तै दुआरे हम आहाँ से नीक छी ।”
“Well, I am better because I am, afterall, Ganesha’s mouse,” the mouse…that is…this was said by the mouse, “Yes, yes, I am the one who is Ganesha’s–I am his vehicle–that is why I am better than you.”
त दुन्नु में होए लग्लेन । कहल्खिन, “हमहुँ तऽ बड्ड नीक छी । तखन तऽ हमहुँ नीक छी ।“
Thus, they started quarrelling. Each said to the other, “I am better than you. I am much better than you.”
दुन्नु के…पहले सुन्दरता से भेलेन जे, “हम बड्ड सुन्दर छी ।” तैकर बाद महानता पर चैल ऐलैन जे, “हमहुँ
तऽ…गणेशजी के सवारी छी ।”
Both of them…they first argued over their beauty, “I am more beautiful.” Then their argument turned to their greatness, “I am…moreover, the vehicle of Ganesha.”
त ओ कहल्खिन, “हमरो तऽ राम भगवान…से अपना स्नेह सॅ छूनै छै, तऽ हम हुन्कर स्नेह के पात्र बनल छी जेकर कि हमरा अथि देनै छैथ, चिन्ह देनै छैथ ।”
So, he too averred, “I too am loved by Lord Ram….he touched me with affection, so I am the object of his love for which he has given me this thing, he has given me his emblem.”
तऽ दुनु में ऐना होएत होएत बात आगे बैढ़ गैलेन और दुन्नु के भौ गेलेन जे…इ महानता सुन्दरता के बदला…इ दुन्नु में भौ गेलैन झगड़ा के अथि चैल ऐलैन । दुन्नु लड़ै लग्लैथ ।
Their quarrel grew more intense and they both felt that…as a result of their greatness and beauty…this caused them to fight with each other. They began fighting each other.
आब दुन्नु में भौ गेलै जे, “नै, हम सुन्दर ।”
Now the two were arguing, “No, I am more beautiful.”
तऽ ओ कहल्खिन, “हम सुन्दर ।”
Then one said, “I am more beautiful.”
इ कहथिन, “हम महान ।” तऽ ओ कहथिन, “हम महान ।”
He said, “I am the greater.” Then the other replied, “I am the greater.”
तऽ कहलखिन, “चलूँ । आब दुन्नु आदमी जे लैड़तै रहब, तऽ दुन्नु के झगड़ा बढ़लै जाएत । त चलू एकरा कोनो तेसर आदमी से एकरा बात के फैसला करा लू ।
Finally one said, “Come on. If both of us continue to fight with each other, then our feud will get worse. Let us go to a third person and let them decide on this issue.
तेसर…मतलब…परसन से…हम एकरा फैसला करा लेब कि…जे मतलब हम छी नीक कि आहाँ छी नीक ? लेकिन हम तऽ कहबै, ‘हम नीक ।’ आहाँ कहैछियै, हम नीक ।’ तऽ कहियौ फरियाएत नै । तऽ, ‘चलूँ ।’”
A third…that is…third person…we will get this issue judged by the third person…that is…whether I am better or whether you are better. Otherwise I will say, ‘I am better.’ And you will continue to say, ‘I am better.’ Then we will never resolve this issue. So, let us go.”
तऽ, गेलैथ, इ सब ।
Thus they went away.
तऽ एकटा मैँढ़क लग में गेलैन, तऽ हुन्का कहलखिन…कहलखिन…हुन्को आश्चर्ज लाएगतीये…”दुन्नु दोस्त आए किया ऐलैथ यऽ ।”
They went to a frog. They said to him…said…He too was surprised…”Why have your two friends come here?”
त पूछलखिन, “की दोस्त, आहाँ दुन्नु दोस्त हमरा सॅ मीलै लॅ एलौँ हँ आए ?”
So he asked them, “O friends! Why have you come together to see me today?”
तऽ कहलखिन जे, “हँ, मीलै लॅ एलौं हँ, से हमरा दुनु लॅग में एकटा समस्या चैल रहलयऽ ।”
And they replied, “Yes, we have come to see you, because we two have a problem.”
तऽ कहल्खिन, “की समस्या ऐच्छ ? कहु ।”
So he asked, “What is the problem? Tell me.”
“अ तऽ हमर समस्या…दुनु दोस्त के इ भौ गेलै कि आए हमर मित्र कहै छथिन…जे दुनु में भौ गेल बात जे इ कहै छथिन जे, ‘हम छी सुन्दर ।’ हम कहै छीयै, ‘हम छी सुन्दर ।’
“Our problem is…we two friends have begun wondering as my friend says…as we both have been saying, and as he says, ‘I am more beautiful.’ But I say, ‘I am more beautiful.’
तकर बाद फेर महानता पर बात भैल, तऽ हम कहै छी, ‘हम छी महान ।’ तऽ इ कहै छथिन, “हम छी महान ।’ तऽ आब आहाँ हमरा फैसला कॅ दिय जे हमरा दुनु में के सुन्दर ए और के महान ए ?”
Then we argued about our greatness. So, he says, ‘I am the greater.’ And I say, ‘I am great.’ Now you judge it whether he is greater or whether I am greater?”
ओ कनी काल गुम भौ गेलैन । तकर बाद ओ अपने कहल्थिन, “आब आहाँ जे छी से छी, लेकिन सबसे महान तऽ हम छी ।”
He kept quiet for a while. Then he replied, “While you may be what you are, I am the greatest among us all.”
तब दुनु आदमी…दुनु चूहा अ गिलहड़ी जे छला, तऽ दुनु एक दोसर के मुँह देखै लगलेन । कहल्खिन, “से केना ?”
Then both people…both mouse and squirrel, they both looked at each other and asked, “How so?”
दुन्नु कहलखिन, “’से केना ?’ हमरा दुन्नु में तऽ एखन, हमरा दुन्नु के इहो ऐच्छ…।” तखन दुन्नु माएन लेल्खिन जे, “हमरो भगवान सवारी बनैने छैथ, तऽ हिन्को स्नेह के पात्र बनैने छथिन । लेकिन आहाँ कोन आधार पर कहै छी जे, ‘आहाँ हमरा दुन्नु से नीक छी, आहाँ बताऊ ।’”
They both asked, “’How so?’ Between the two of us, we both have been claiming this…” We both have agreed, “I have been made the vehicle of a god, and he too has been the object of godly affection. But on what basis on are you claiming, ‘I am better than both of you?.’ Explain this to us.”
तऽ कहल्खिन, “हम जखन सावन भादौ में पाएन होएत रहै छै, तखन जे हम कोँकैँ कोँकैँ करैत रहै छी, तऽ ओ आवाज़ कतै सुन्दर लागै छै ।”
To which query he replied, “When it rains in savan (July-August) and bhadau (Aug-Sep), then I begin croaking, ‘kon-kain-kon-kain!’ How pleasant is my voice then!”
तऽ दुन्नु चूहा अ गिलहड़ी दुन्नु एक दोसर के ताकै लगल्खिन, कहल्खिन, बुझ गेल्खिन कि, “नै, अपना नज़र में सब नीकै रहै छै । तै दुआरे कखनो दोसर सॅ पहिले अपना आप के बढ़ियाँ ने कहबाक चाही ।” दुन्नु के जवाब भैंट गेलै, दुन्नु घर चएल गेलै ।
The mouse and squirrel looked at each other, and they spoke to each other, and they understood: “No, everyone looks best to himself. That is why, one should never consider oneself better than others.” Having found the answer to their query, they returned home.
Maithili Transcript
एकटा गिलहड़ी और चूहा दुन्नु दोस्त छलै, खूब दुन्नु में दोस्ती छलैयऽ । दुनु एकै जगह बेसै छलै । बात करै छलै । एक दिन बैसल छलै । तऽ बाते करैत करैत करैत दुन्नु में अपनै पर बात भौ गेलै कि, “चल…चलू दोस्त आहाँ नीक छी, कि हम नीक छी ?”
तऽ गिलहड़ी कहल्खिन, “नैय्यो, आहाँ सॅ नीक हम छी ।” “नै,” कहल्खिन गिलहड़ी, “हम तऽ बड्ड नीक छी ।”
तऽ चूहा कहल्खिन, “नै, आहाँ सॅ नीक हम छी ।”
तऽ कहल्खिन, “से केना ?”
“आ, तऽ हम ऐय दुआरे नीक छी जे हम तऽ गणेशजी के…” चूहा…मतलब…इ कहल्खिन चूहा जे “हँ, हँ, हम जे छी से हम तऽ गणेशजी के अथी में छी, हुन्कर सवारी में छी, तै दुआरे हम आहाँ से नीक छी ।”
त दुन्नु में होए लग्लेन । कहल्खिन, “हमहुँ तऽ बड्ड नीक छी । तखन तऽ हमहुँ नीक छी ।“

तऽ कहलखिन, “चलूँ । आब दुन्नु आदमी जे लैड़तै रहब, तऽ दुन्नु के झगड़ा बढ़लै जाएत । त चलू एकरा कोनो तेसर आदमी से एकरा बात के फैसला करा लू । तेसर…मतलब…परसन से…हम एकरा फैसला करा लेब कि…जे मतलब हम छी नीक कि आहाँ छी नीक ? लेकिन हम तऽ कहबै, ‘हम नीक ।’ आहाँ कहैछियै, हम नीक ।’ तऽ कहियौ फरियाएत नै । तऽ, ‘चलूँ ।’”
तऽ, गेलैथ, इ सब । तऽ एकटा मैँढ़क लग में गेलैन, तऽ हुन्का कहलखिन…कहलखिन…हुन्को आश्चर्ज लाएगतीये…“दुन्नु दोस्त आए किया ऐलैथ यऽ ।” त पूछलखिन, “की दोस्त, आहाँ दुन्नु दोस्त हमरा सॅ मीलै लॅ एलौँ हँ आए ?”
